used to have a similar machine that had 'moog' etched on some of the circuit boards inside and a basic un-editable synthesizer section on the upper keys, unusual for an organ but still not very good sounding or interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo many say they don't like Thomas organs, but if you do then you have never heard the Thomas Californian Spinets 261,262, 263, and Quadraphonic. A gentleman from Fairfield,Connecticut named Harry Wach made a record for Cardinal Records entitled 'Californian Here I Come' back in the 70's. I am currently working on uploading this incredible album to Youtube. Give it a listen. You will not be disappointed! If you play a Californian then note that Harry has a fuzzy edge to his sound that I have yet to figure out how he accomplished this. The Accordion- percussion preset ( last blue rocker sw. on right) has a fuzzy tone to it, but Harry's is beyond even this. The Thomas wah circuit built into the organ is amazing! I swear people have not a clue when it comes to the sonic potential of the organ. Also check out Mr.Fantastic and the Wonderful World of Wurlitzer on youtube. Prepare to be blown away.
ReplyDeleteI own a Thomas Californian 263 ( BTW Harry Wach is playing the 262 model), A Thomas Palace III 901- 3 manual console organ, a Wurlitzer 625t, a Wurlitzer 4500, and a Hammond M3 & an S6 Hammond. I also have a Thomas Californian 287 'Theatre'. I'd love to hear what it sounds like- I heard it for 3 minutes when I bought it last fall, but it stopped working when I got it home. It's a 'Master Oscillator Top Order Synthesis' model, unlike the Californian spinets which are 100% transistor after the initial pair of 6-pin Motorola IC's. Bottom line is that you won't hear the same tone just because they're both called Californians. Rule of thumb, if you want one of the greatest musical instruments ever made get a Thomas Californian Spinet... as soon as I fix that 287 I might be bragging that one up too. And oh' yeah, the Thomas Palace III is a beast in it's own right. I just got it two weeks ago so I am still exploring it. It fully works with the exception of the Band Box. It came with the 901 and 904 service manuals. Funny that Band box uses a bunch of single transistor drum sounds. You can choose the lower manual or the Bass pedals to trigger each sound, or have both trigger at the same time. The 904 model brought with it the Thomas Playmate for a little more automation. The 901, you're making it all happen LOL!
