  1. I like the new take on the synth structure--three independent tones like a ROMpler, but with VA engines--but my favorite part of the JP8000 and SH201, the feedback oscillator, is gone. Also, using sync makes the synth monophonic, and it's not multitimbral. This happens so often with new synths from big manufacturers: some features are gained, while other useful ones that are not technologically cutting edge are lost. Frustrating.

  2. Funny you should mention ROMplers, because under its VA clothing that's exactly what the SH-01 is. In many ways it looks like little more than a development of the SH-32, but using the Juno-D's synthesis engine rather than the previous generation's. That's probably the reason for it offering a full GM/GS sound source via MIDI too, and being 64-voice polyphonic. Not that I'm saying it's a bad synth - now they've replaced the SH-201, I can't think of another polysynth in its price range which adopts its "all the controls on the front" approach, although the XioSynth sticks the most useful knobs out there - it's just not what's commonly understood by the term VA (as opposed to the SH-201, which is); and nowhere is that made clearer than in turning sync on, because it instantly disables both polyphony and filtering. (It'd probably have been better for Roland to omit sync altogether, given that plenty of analogue polysynths didn't offer it.)

  3. I wonder if it's as zippery and aliasy as the JP8000 and the SH-201, too. I wish Roland would make a really good VA.
