via this auction"It is interesting to realize that the roots of the whole Ensoniq range of products lie in the humble SID chip by MOS. Here we have the legendary ESQ-1 keyboard, the first of many instruments to use this core technology. Sure it is a complete instrument with polyphonic keyboard & sequencer; however each voice has the same fundamental structure as the original SID element, enhanced in some ways and using SSM & Curtis chips. The use of stepped, wave memory in lieu of the more conventional additive synthesis is the real stroke of genius that gives Ensoniq, its powerful, realistic and bitsy sound like no other; like a bunch of Sid Stations on steroids… Even when the concept was foolishly shelved by new owners Creative, another company stepped into the breach and thankfully introduced the aptly named Evolver."
