Video Interview with Soviet Polivoks Engineer

"Here's a lithuanian report about the Polivoks. It features an interview of the engeneer who created the synth and some element of soviet life! Listen to the sound of the synth at 2min10. I can't add the subtitles in the video, but here s the lithuanian -french translation! [Googlish below]

Le synthétiseur de l’époque soviétique polivoks revient à la mode dans le monde de la musique.

On l’entend de plus en plus souvent sur scène, que ce soit avec les groupes russes à la mode ou avec des groupes comme Franz Ferdinand. Ces instruments peu appréciés dans les années 90 par les groupes russes sont désormais populaires parmi les groupes de l’Ouest

« Dans la musique actuelle de boite de nuit, il faut créer de nouveaux sons qui ne sont pas possibles avec les synthés actuels » .

Dans les années 80, quand le synthétiseur est devenu populaire, importer des instruments de l’Ouest en Union soviétique était interdit. Quelques musiciens célèbres ont cependant reçu quelques instruments des Autorités mais la majorité d’entre eux n’y avait pas droit .

Voulant apporter la possibilité aux musiciens pro d’utiliser des synthés, Vladimir Skuzminas et les ingénieurs de la fabrique de « Vektorius » située dans l’Oural au centre de la Russie, ont décidé de produire leurs propres synthés.

Etudiant les synthés étrangers et les ouvrages spécialisés mais fréquentant peu les concerts, Skuminas et ses collègues ont créé le célèbre synthétiseur Polivoks

L’usine de radio militaire Verdlovska a commencé la production en 1982 ; il coûtait 920 roubles soit l’équivalent de 8 mois de salaire. De nos jours, il est devenu, à sa façon, un instrument prestigieux au soin unique que chaque musicien se doit d’avoir
