MATRIXSYNTH: Site Issues on Safari

Site Issues on Safari

I've had a couple of reports of the site not fully loading for people, specifically with YouTube posts coming up blank. It seems to be happening when clicking on the Older Posts link on the bottom of the page. I am not seeing the issue on Firefox but I am on Safari. However, if I open the Older Posts link in a new tab, the posts come up fine. If you are seeing the problem try it, and of course feel free to comment. I am using the default embed code for YouTube. This is not happening on Firefox.

Update: Finally got a chance to look into this in more detail and I think I might have fixed the problem. There was some old script I implemented a while back so I could paginate super long posts. The code let you set the number of characters you wanted to display in a post and added a more link to see the rest of the post. Well, Blogger rolled out their own and the two collided. I removed the old script and things are now appear to be working in Safari. Hopefully this also takes care of some of the other problems people were seeing mentioned in the comments. Thanks goes to VICMOD for the tip that helped me identify the problem. He reported seeing odd bxAv110 links at the bottom of each post on the second page on. These links were generated by the old script.

  2. That's odd. What version and OS are you on? I went back ten pages w/o a problem on FF4 on a Mac. I'll check IE on Windows in a bit.

  3. I am experience this problem now for 3 days every time I use the "Older Posts" link. Using Mac OS X 10.6.7 and Safari 5.04 here.

  4. IE4 and FF3 on Windows Vista are fine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. There was a recent update to Safari so that might explain it. Not sure what's going on with Vicmod and Firefox though.

  5. I've encountered this problem for several months now.

I'm running Safari in MacOS 1.6.7, but seen it at 1.6.5-6 as well. Adobe flash is up to date.

Sometimes if I visit Matrixsynth via a Google reader RSS link, the video won't work. But if I load in the main page in Safari and try to navigate to what I wanted to see, it sometimes works. Sometimes...

  7. Other bugs on OSX (latest) and Safari, beyond page one via Older Posts,

If you click on the post text, the post will collapse (only the title and bottom are visible) and not reopen. Doesn't happen in single post view.

Clicking the back button always takes you to the first page.

  8. Back button behavior is by design in the browser and Blogger. You have to click on the Newer Posts link at the bottom of the page to get to the previous page. The site works as a page in the browser. Even though you click older posts the browser itself things you are on the same page.

As for Safari, I tried removing the elements on the right of the site to see if maybe a script there was hanging things up, but I couldn't find anything. I also tried removing the Site Meter counter on the bottom of the site which has been there for years unchanged. Nothing seemed to make a difference. At this point I'm at a loss and summing it up to YouTube behavior on Safari.

It is clearly hanging on YouTube and YouTube is constantly making updates as well as Safari. The latest update to Safari was on March 09. I'm not sure when the latest YouTube update was but I do know my subscriptions were recently giving me the "this feature is not currently available" message typical of YouTube when they do make updates.

The current work around is to open the Older Posts link in a new window.

Supporting various browsers is always painful. A bug you are not seeing, but one that is currently making posting multiple images on my end a real burden, is a bug with Blogger and FF4. When you load multiple images the last image which should be placed on top ends up on the bottom of the set. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is when uploading multiple sets of images. You have to keep track of the order of images and remember the last one will not be in order but moved to the bottom.

As for posts, I just go with what YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud and other sites make available. It's all standard embed code. What shows will depend on their services and your connection to them. If you happen to hit a hiccup when loading a post, the video may not load.

I'll see if there is an alternative to the "Older Posts" link but I'm guessing even if there is it may not help.

Again, if anyone has any ideas out there, feel free to share.

  9. I just checked Google Chrome and Opera. Both are working fine and do not display the problem seen with Safari.

  10. i am personally seeing the issue with Chrome (on Win7). You tube videos don't seem to load, and the Older Posts link sometimes sends me several pages backward (or forward, depending on how you look at it). Thanks for the site, though, it's awesome!

  11. This stinks. One other thing you can do until the issue hopefully resolves itself is use the archive drop downs on the right so you don't missing anything. Be sure to branch down to the day otherwise you'll be loading hundreds of posts if you accidentally click on more than that. Also, you can use the Featured label to the right of "Other:" on the right of the site to get to the top posts of the day. That or just click on the label in a given post. I'll see if I can find a solution as I have time.

  12. I put a post up on the Blogger Help forums to see if anyone there can help. Another bizarre bug is the bxAv110 bxAv110 bxAv110 links at the bottom of posts on the second page following. I'm seeing that one some other Blogger sites. I put a post up on the Blogger Help forums for that as well. I'll keep you posted.

  13. Blank YouTube videos on Safari on OSX I can live with. Outright crashing Safari on iOS is another matter. This is the only site that has ever done this.

  14. Well done, the problem vanished. Thanks. Now the most informative pages for synth freaks is working fine again.

  15. Thanks! I'm one of the people who reported this problem, and I've been unable to find it again for several days on multiple Macs. Solved!
