A Poll on Computers In the Studio
I'm curious how many people currently use computers in their studio and if so, do you use it for audio, MIDI or both. Feel free to share and expand your opinion in the comments.

I voted "yes for audio and MIDI", however I'm phasing out MIDI entirely in favor of OSC and raw output of CV to my modular... so it'd be more accurate to say "Yes for audio and sequencing".

ReplyDeleteOK, updated to better reflect that. Also wanted to cover software editing of hardware synths with Sound Diver and the like.
ReplyDeleteIt's more a case of"I have a studio in my computer"
ReplyDeleteIn my sound space (doesn't measure up to my standard for "studio", but it's where I do my stuff), the computer is central for audio: multi-track recording and audio effects processing. The synthesizers, however, are all external hardware (I just never meshed with any of the software synths I tried). All my synths are MIDI capable, so no CV to deal with (yet... Eurorack addiction beckons...)
ReplyDeleteOn the MIDI side, the computer is mostly for editing/librarian functions. The primary sequencing is done on an external hardware unit (an E-mu PX7 Command Station). I will occasionally use the computer for MIDI sequencing, if I want to quickly sync some MIDI notes to previously recorded audio.
The guiding notion was: give the audio generation to dedicated hardware boxes built for that task, take the load off the computer so it can concentrate on recording the audio (it has enough to deal with saddled with Windows drivers). Season after with VST to taste...

ReplyDeleteComputers are pretty central to my work - I sometimes use more than one, and for more than just audio and MIDI sequencing - custom synthesis, real-time controller processing, etc.
ReplyDeleteI use my computer for MIDI and audio, but I don't use soft synths, and I didn't really see that reflected in the poll. I sequence my synths from my computer, then record the final audio on my computer; checking "both audio and MIDI" makes it sound like I don't use hardware synths.
