Note the following. Do these not have a built in synth engine?

"This Proteus 2500 does not have a sound ROM installed. You will need to supply your own in order to use this unit. This Mo'Phatt takes standard E-mu 16 and 32 MB sound ROMs. You can use your ROMs from Command Stations and also from Proteus 2000 series rack synths and keyboards. This is a great way to add sound ROM capacity to your studio or replace a broken Emu synth.

The following ROMs will work with this unit:
9061: Siedlaczek Orchestra 32 MB ROM.
9062: Pure Phatt 32 MB ROM - standard in Mo'Phatt, MP-7 and MK-6.
9063: Beat Garden 32 MB ROM - standard in Orbit 3.

  1. I think the synth engine is always there, but the swappable ROM chips provide the sample ROM used as oscillator waveforms. (There is no native sample ROM for oscillator waveforms.) A bunch of patches come with each ROM chip, too, but I think those patches are loaded into the synth's RAM once the chips are installed. I used one of these for a while, and I don't remember having to store patches using samples from, say, chip A on chip A. I also remember being able to mix samples from different chips.

So the answer to your question is probably that the synth engine and patch storage are built-in, but no samples are. Great filters in these later E-mu hardware synths, though.

  2. Interesting. Thanks. I never knew that. I guess when it was sold new it had a sample set included so this never really came up.

  3. All the sampled waveforms are on the ROM chips (up to 4 @ 32 MB each). They all came with at least one ROM installed. The Proteus 2500 and the Command Stations also have pretty nice sequencers so I could see picking one up for just that purpose.
