ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see this one. I used the EML 200 in Experimental Music In Junior High. Been in Love ever since.
ReplyDeleteYeah - I used one in Junior High, too. West Hartford - near the EML factory. Nice guys and they'd let me use their studio sometimes. These sound files sound just like the tapes we all made with the 200. I thought it was pretty limited and mostly like to put it on the floor and run other synths through its reverb and then kick the box for a nice explosion sound :) Don't worry - it was in an indestructible wood box since it was designed for use in schools!
ReplyDeleteWe also has the EML 500 - kind of lame Odyssey wanna-be, the 101 - Minimoog wanna-be with really weak filter, and the 300 - a bizarre knob and telephone push-button add-on for the 200. Could never tune the damn thing since the tuning knobs for each button weren't active when the button was pushed. You had to keep turning/pressing/turning/pressing/etc. The 200's VCO were linear (Hz/volt), not exponential (1v/octave), which made transposing impossible.
Kind-of fun box for '50s Sci-Fi movie soundtrack stuff, but there's a billion other synths I'd rather see resurrected.
This doesn't remotely sound like a 200 at all. "Inspired by" perhaps should be the description.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the "improvements" are as it certainly has a different sound. Will it actually have hz/v tuning? Will the gate values be the same as old EML gear?
wondering still if it's analog, digital or a plugin...

ReplyDeleteI believe that this is intended more as a tribute to the original rather than an exact in every detail recreation. Just looking at the photos it appears that they have replaced the spring reverb with a delay unit and added an extra LFO in the place of a microphone input.
Those waveforms do look a tad perfect?
ReplyDeleteI would think that the original EML sawtooth would be a bit more 'ugly'. It would be good if they did a proper side-by-side comparison. Not just sitting the EML next to it.
Still, looks like a giant sack of fun times!
