Circular Keyboard Finish - organfairy's Jarre-like Circular Keyboard Controller

YouTube Published on Jun 11, 2012 by organfairy

"A while ago I converted some old christmas decoration into a circular keyboard. Now it's the time to finish it and get some light in the keys.
It didn't turn out as impressive as Jean Michel Jarre's circular monstrosity [see this post and this post]. But I still think it came out pretty well.

Unfortunately it doesn't work very well when it comes to generating control voltages because the input impedance of the operational amplifier in the sample-and-hold circuit is too low. But if I change the bipolar LM324 to a JFET based opamp then it should be fine. I just need to get some.

The music is something I made back in 2001 on Yamaha HE-8 organ and Roland JX-8P synthesizer."

  1. Ha! Just had a look back at the supposed JMJ circular keyboard, mentioned here, and all the comments about the asking price (1,000,000 euro) and whether or not it was genuine. No one seemed to notice that the keyboard is not even laid out correctly - there are 2 white keys between each black one! I trust organfairy will not make such a rudimentary mistake.

  2. That is pretty funny regarding the keys. I added a link to another post which you can find here with some pics of JMJ and the controller.

  3. No, my circular keyboard is laid out as a "real" keyboard - except that all the keys are made from the same 9mm wood. So they actually more resemble a very small set of organ pedals - but still they are organized as a normal chromatic keyboard.
Regarding Jarre's keyboard I have counted the number of white keys to 32. That is close to 2½ octave. There are black keys for 2½ octave so I thought that maybe all the keys are long and the black narrow ones are just there to indicate which of the white keys are flats/sharps. Another idea could be that the black keys are just there for decoration and only the white ones are working and tuned in C or transposed - like a cajun accordion.
