"I bought a MV-8000 from eBay fully working... well not quite. Then I set about bringing it back to life.

After buying the unit I bought the training dvd and the first thing it said was there was Midi In so you could play a keyboard into it. When I tried it didn't work. I went online and followed all the links thinking it was user error i.e. ME. But when nothing worked the electronics head engaged and it was time to go electronic fishing and open it up for a little investigation.

This video is how i fixed the problem without spending hundreds of pounds on a Roland repair. Don't even dream of attempting this unless you have a steady hand, have a good quality soldering iron or a father or friend who has the bits.

As with all repairs there is a Danger Of Death to you and the machine so I don't recommend you do it ! and I take no responsibility for showing you how it can be done.

As it is, I'm really pleased with the result, cheap simple cheerful and satisfying for me.

The experience amongst you will say argh you should have just replaced the PC410S surface mount opto isolator, but to try that without taking the board out and the machine to bits would have been foolish. Also, Surface mount solder melts at a much lower rate than normal solder and working to solder a replacement part in could have desolder more bits and solder flood and subsequent use of a sucker to suck up solder could have stripped the board, so i kept it simple and safe. Just 3 think wires.

The unit also had function key death on keys f4 and f5 and i've posted another video on a really simple and cheap fix of those buttons.

The Ambient Music is by me FIXED1T and I composed it last night to go with this fix, track is called:

Roland MV-8000 Function Key Repair

Published on Jul 15, 2012 by FIXED1T

"I hate it when companies make manufacturing decisions that make servicing expensive gear almost impossible. This is fine when the units are new and in warranty but when they decide to move on they users are left with expensive problems or short of parts.

For this reason I like to find cheap and easy fixes that people without the synth building and electronics fixing experience I have, can do.

Here is a really simple, incredibly cheap but effective fix for the Roland MV-8000 dreaded Function Key death. This is like an old UK Blue Peter job, all you need is a screwdriver, patience and some 'sticky backed' rubber. If you don't have any sticky backed rubber you could peel apart an old mouse mat then fold over the sticky side so it sticks to itself.
