Moog Sonic V Demo & Restoration Videos

Moog Sonic V Part I

Published on Jul 10, 2013 New England Analog LLC·16 videos

Not all parts of this series are up.  I'll let you know when they are.  The first video is a demo of the Moog Sonic V prior to the restoration.  The videos below are parts of the restoration.

"This is the first part in a 5 part series detailing the restoration of a rare Musonics Moog Sonic V. We begin by powering up the synthesizer and seeing what's wrong. We found that the keyboard mechanicals were in dire need of attention, and there is a lot of noise and intermittent behavior. There is also a high pitched whistle that can be heard even when the master volume is turned down.

NEA Sonic V Restoration Part III

Moog Sonic V Restoration part 4

Published on Jul 10, 2013

"This is part 4 of a 5 part series detailing the restoration of a Moog Sonic V. There were only 100 of these made and they are very rare. In this section we will be replacing all polarized capacitors, all 741 and 784 IC chips (there are about 50 of them in a Sonic V) and replacing the voltage regulators and electronics in the amplifier. We didn't get footage of us rebuilding the sliders on the boards, but that was also covered in this installation.
For anyone enjoying the music, the artist is the late great Clare Fischer and the album is Salsa Picante. I don't believe it is in print anymore, and this is a recording I made from vinyl. You can contact the Fischer family and they will sell a CD of any of Clare's work to
you.

Moog Sonic V Part VI - Before and After

Published on Jul 12, 2013

"This is the final video in out six-part series detailing the restoration of a Moog Sonic V synthesizer. We start by showing some footage of the synth when we got it, and then conclude with footage of the synth after having all of the op-amps, polarized capacitors, bridge rectifiers, regulators, and amplifier components replaced. The difference is stunning. No audio processing was done on either set of clips. This video also shows the dramatic difference that can be made by upgrading components like op-amps, capacitors, and voltage regulators. A good deal of electronic troubleshooting took place to solve the problem of the high pitched whistle. It ended up being components in the regulator circuit that had drifted out of spec, causing the LM723 to oscillate."
