"No its not a sewing machine..This is a classic Roland SH5 synth, no question its Roland's best integrated analog monosynth. Probably most similar to having a system 100 with a nice size keyboard in a 'portable' stage instrument. You have most of the features of the system 100, It sounds very similar, but 'patching' is more limited and done with switches instead of cords. The mixer section has a switch matrix where you can route individual sources to one or more the different filters (there are 2), directly to the vca etc. So you could, for example, have oscillator 1 going though a lowpass filter, the ring mod going though no filter, and white noise going though the bandpass filter.

The bandpass filter is everybit as good as people say it is, and is totally unique sounding. The closest thing I have heard to it is the arp 2500 multimode filter. if you've never used an sh-5 before you're first 30 minutes will be spent tweaking the bandpass filter in awe. Other notable strengths are the sample and hold which can sample any waveform, and the very 70s sounding ring modulator with external input. The pitch bender is also very nicely calibrated, when set to 'fourths' it has just the right about of bend for funky expressive lead playing.

The synth functions great, and sounds incredible, its very stable tuning wise right from startup. The sliders and pots on these synths are an absolute joy to use, they have just the right amount of resistance, smooth silky movement and feel indestructible. These are very road worthy instruments, almost overbuilt like a minimoog D. One thing about roland manuals of this era is they need to be played consistently.. If you let it sit for 3 weeks without playing it, you are bound to get some double triggering on some notes for the first little while noodling on it.

Its in nice shape physically but there is a bit of corrosion around the pitch bender area, as seen in the photos.

The power supply was recapped about 2-3 years ago, and was fully calibrated at that time."
