Update: turns out compression wasn't the culprit. Google+ has an option for "Automatically enhance new photos and videos". It was set to Normal. I set it to Off and it appears everything looks good again. Below are examples of JPEGs vs PNGs for the two settings. The setting impacts image uploads to Blogger so if you were wondering why your images didn't quite look the same after upload, this is why. You'll find it under Google+ settings. There's an option to upload full size photos as well.
