This post might take a bit to load. :)

Update3: You can find a write-up on Novamusik here.

Update2: You can find comments and discussion on this post on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge here. I also added a page break for this post on the main site so it doesn't slow the site down for new posts. Click the "Click for more" link to get to the full post.

Update: Added full specs for each for the sake of completion. I think the current round of updates are done for now. I'll will add a note here if more comes in. If more comes in after new posts have gone up, I'll put a new post to make sure you don't miss anything. New posts will resume shortly.

List prices: TR-8 $499, TB-3 $299, VT-3 $199, System-1 $599

Quick note: I've been pretty neutral when it comes to these and to new synth releases in general.  I like to keep my opinion and bias out and present things as they are.  There is one thing I do want to mention in this case and it's something that has bothered me for quite some time.  The System-1 is four voice. Why manufacturers come out with four voice polys I'll never understand. Five should be the minimum in my opinion, preferably six. Voice dropping/stealing just sucks on a four voice. Some of us do like patches with longer release times. I can kind of understand with analog hardware as the cost of components go up, but even then I think adding that one extra voice like in a Prophet-5 would be worth the cost. For VAs there's no excuse.

"First run, first 8 minutes, straight out of the box. Just quickly finding my way around the new boxes. No major statement.

All you are hearing are Roland's new:
TR-8 Rhythm Performer
TR-3 Touch Bassline
VT-3 Voice Transformer

Very immediate, straight forward and a lot of fun! No need to read the manual with these puppies.

Audio is straight off the desk no post, no added effects, no sugar, no salt etc..absolutely nothing else. TR-3 output is going into VT-3 which is then going into the external in of the TR-8.

Will have some more clips up in the next few days.

Yeah had to slot the new boxes right in the middle of me original TR-808, TR-909, TB-303 and VT-1, shhhhh keep your voice down, there might be children in the room.

I will be performing a live PA with these boxes for Roland's Aira launch in Sydney on Feb 24

Official press release followed by pics & additional details on each:

"Los Angeles, CA, February 14, 2014 — Roland is proud to announce the long-awaited series of AIRA products. With roots in the very origins of electronic music, the new AIRA line is designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s electronic musicians. In the studio or on the stage, AIRA brings genre-defining sound and modern performance features to a new generation. The first four products introduced in the AIRA series are the TR-8 Rhythm Performer, TB-3 Touch Bassline, VT-3 Voice Transformer, and SYSTEM-1 PLUG-OUT Synthesizer.

At the heart of AIRA is the newly developed Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) that faithfully captures the sound and feel of some of Roland’s most revered classics. ACB is the technology behind the authentic sound and responsive behavior of the AIRA products. It utilizes original design specs, consultation with original engineers, and a detailed part-by-part analysis of each analog circuit using Roland’s collection of pristinely archived drum machines and synthesizers.

TR-8 Rhythm Performer
The TR-8 is a performance rhythm machine that melds the legendary sound and vibe of the TR-808 and TR-909 with features and functions for the modern age. Unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in the 1980s, the TR-808 and TR-909 produced arguably the most influential drum sounds in modern music. With the authentic tone and character of the original units and with new sound-tweaking capabilities and performance functions inspired by legions of users, the TR-8 breathes new life into these iconic sounds.

TB-3 Touch Bassline
Based on the wildly influential TB-303, the new TB-3 Touch Bassline is a performance-ready bass synthesizer with authentic sound and intuitive controls engineered to play. The TB-3 contains the unmistakable character of its predecessor wrapped in a modern package sporting a pressure-sensitive touch pad that makes both playing and programming a total joy.

VT-3 Voice Transformer
Aggressively processed vocals are common in electronic music today, but producing these effects easily and reproducing them live continues to be a challenge – until now. The VT-3 can smoothly alter Pitch and Formant and can introduce Vocoder, Synth, lo-fi and other heavily processed vocal sounds into studio tracks and live performances with zero hassle.

SYSTEM-1 PLUG-OUT Synthesizer
With the unmistakable character associated with Roland synthesizers for nearly four decades, the SYSTEM-1 not only sounds amazing but has a totally innovative design with performance-ready controls, quality construction, and a dizzying array of lights, knobs and sliders. PLUG-OUT technology means the SYSTEM-1 can control—and even host—software recreations of classic Roland synthesizers with no computer connected and can even switch between its native sounds and those of the PLUG-OUT synthesizer.

All AIRA products are designed to work seamlessly and look great with other products in the AIRA series.

AIRA products will be available by the end of second quarter 2014. For more details, please visit www.RolandUS.com/AIRA.

THE LINEAGE

Unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in the 1980s, the TR-808 and TR-909 produce arguably the most influential drum sounds in modern music. Not only have they appeared on thousands of dance tracks over the course of three decades, they’ve helped define the sound of entire musical genres. From rap and house to techno and trance, the TR-808 and TR-909 have left an indelible mark on the art and culture of music. Roll the drums…

THE SOUND

In developing the TR-8, we’ve obsessively analyzed and faithfully recreated every detail and nuance of the analog circuitry of these legendary rhythm machines—the boom and snap of the 808; the thud of the 909; the robotic click of an 808 rim shot or a classic 909 snare roll. It’s all here. But not content with mere recreations, we’ve enhanced these classic instruments with capabilities that go far beyond the original units.

Tune and Decay knobs are now present on every instrument, and the Bass Drum and Snare Drum have additional controls such as Attack, Snappy, and Comp. This allows for a wide variety of tones, from subtle ambient percussion to pounding dance grooves. Per-step effects and the massively addictive Scatter function take things into entirely new territory.

With the authentic tone and character of the original units and new sound-tweaking capabilities inspired by legions of users, the TR-8 breathes new life into the sounds we all know and love.

THE FEEL

Make no mistake—the TR-8 has been carefully designed from the ground up as an instrument to be played. Every control has a solid, predictable feel, with each drum instrument having robust, “playable” faders. Numerous lighted knobs and RGB buttons give both real-time performance feedback and a striking appearance on stage.

Pattern creation is creative and intuitive using an evolved version of the TR-REC method, which originated in the TR-808 and eventually became the standard for electronic rhythm programming. Based on detailed analysis of the original TR-808, the TR-REC behavior has been faithfully modeled in the TR-8. But the TR-8 goes well beyond the original, allowing you to seamlessly switch between programming and performance modes, and to introduce lots of groovy rhythmic variations from subtle snare fills to total glitch meltdowns.

WHAT IS SCATTER?

Scatter is a unique performance function that gives you detailed real-time control over variations in your patterns and any incoming external input signal.

Scatter can reverse, glitch, gate, truncate, stutter, and perform all manner of rhythmic variations from subtle to extreme, and all in perfect sync
Pick from 10 different types of Scatter and smoothly adjust the intensity—or “Scatter Depth”—with the large, comfortable dial
Seamlessly switch between Scatter patterns and quickly toggle Scatter on/off for cool variations when and where you want them
Try it…you’ll like it!

A FEW MORE THINGS

The TR-8 looks great and is designed to work seamlessly with other products in the AIRA series. In addition, you can connect the TR-8 to your computer via USB to send and receive both audio and MIDI data, including MIDI clock information for syncing with external devices and other AIRA units."

THE LINEAGE

Nobody could have anticipated what would happen to the world of dance music when inventive musicians on both sides of the Atlantic embraced Roland’s now-legendary TB-303. Since the 1980s, it’s been a staple of electronic music—it is the defining sound of acid house, and has since been the marquee instrument on an array of groundbreaking electronic dance tracks. It’s not only been used to write songs, it’s had songs written about it. In fact, the release of the original TB-303 has been heralded as one of the key events in the history of dance music. Not bad for a little silver box.

THE SOUND

Launched in 1981, the TB-303 continues to be an indispensable bass synth for dance music. In developing the TB-3, we’ve meticulously analyzed the circuitry of the original TB-303 piece by piece, right down to the individual circuit behavior. Using Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, we’ve fully reproduced the TB-303’s sawtooth and square wave oscillators, as well as the -18dB per octave ladder low-pass filter used in the original, capturing that unmistakable cutoff and resonance character.

In addition to the faithful reproduction of classic TB tones, the TB-3 is packed with new sounds that live and breathe. Bubbling synth basses, hard distortion basses, trippy delay sounds, and drippy effects—they’re all here, and then some.

THE FEEL

A TB-303 bass part not only sounds unique—it has its own trademark feel as well. The TB pulses. It drives. It bubbles and it percolates. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to faithfully reproduce the accent, slide, and step sequencer behavior of the original unit. But our vision went beyond simple reproduction. The truth is, the step entry on the original TB-303 was difficult to use, the keyboard was difficult to play, and special maneuvers were required for the shuffle functions. So we experimented with a variety of prototypes in our quest to create the optimal TB interface.

TOUCH PAD

The new TB-3 is equipped with a brightly lit, pressure-sensitive touch pad that lets you seamlessly create patterns and interact with the unit during performance. In addition to pitch and volume, you can tweak filters and even control modulation by simply pressing down on the pad with your finger. It also makes the keyboard a breeze to play.

Envelope modulation and decay can be controlled with a single finger
Switch patterns, transpose, and chain patterns with finger gestures
Internally partitioned at keyboard intervals so it’s easy and natural to play in real time
XY Play—X for continuous pitch change, Y for volume, and pad pressure for modulation
STEP SEQUENCER

The TB-3’s evolved step sequencer is a snap to use and allows seamless switching between pattern creation and performance. Of course, an attractive aspect of the original TB-303 was how it would sometimes generate unintended sounds as the user maneuvered through its complex and cryptic pattern-creation operation. In order to inject that element of chance and discovery, the TB-3 includes automatic pattern generation and random pattern modification functions.

SCATTER

The TB-3’s Scatter function features slicing, reverse, gating, and other effects, allowing you to instantly create variations, stutters, and glitches that would normally require painstaking editing in a DAW. Complex, per-step functions are triggered easily with the touch pad and a single finger. You can keep things fresh and interesting with 8 different Scatter variations and 10 levels of Scatter depth—all controllable in real time and in perfect sync.

A FEW MORE THINGS

The TB-3 looks great, and is designed to work seamlessly with other products in the AIRA series. In addition, you can connect the TB-3 to your computer via USB to send and receive both audio and MIDI data, including MIDI clock information for syncing with external devices and other AIRA units."

"SYSTEM-1: PLUG-OUT Synthesizer
Sounds with Character and Loads of Controls in a PLUG-OUT Capable Synthesizer

Back in the 1970s, Roland launched the SYSTEM 100, SYSTEM 100M, and the now almost mythical SYSTEM 700. These modular and semi-modular synthesizers are heralded to this day for their flexibility and character of sound. In the spirit of its predecessors, the SYSTEM-1 breaks new ground with remarkable flexibility and access to a vast palette of tones with the bold, unmistakable character associated with Roland synthesizers for nearly four decades.

Four oscillators for buckets of fat synth tones
Oscillator colors create continuous waveform changes from simple to complex
All parameters can be controlled with physical knobs and sliders with LED indicators
Advanced arpeggiator with Scatter function
Scatter jog dial offers 10 different phrase variations with dynamic, real-time control over 10 stages of depth
-12 dB and -24 dB filter types with independent high-pass filters
Tone knob for easy tonal balancing
Crusher knob for modern edge
Integrated delay and reverb effects
Tempo syncing for LFO and delay
Innovative thin keyboard with 25 normal-sized keys
Comfortable to play, yet the most compact Roland synth ever
73 PHYSICAL CONTROLS. 100 PERCENT SYNTH.

Meet the SYSTEM-1, a synthesizer that’s probably unlike any you’ve encountered before. At its heart is Roland’s new Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, which we use to carefully analyze every aspect of analog circuits and then faithfully recreate them down to the finest details. This technology fills the SYSTEM-1, creating a fusion of beautifully classic and utterly modern synthesizer tones.

The SYSTEM-1 not only sounds amazing, but also has a totally innovative design with performance-ready controls, quality construction, and a dizzying array of lights and knobs and sliders that proclaim unashamedly: “I am synthesizer. Hear me roar.” Sound good? There’s more…

PLUG IN AND PLUG-OUT

The SYSTEM-1 can control—and even host—software recreations of classic Roland synthesizers. That’s right—the SYSTEM-1 gives you access to plug-in versions of legendary Roland synths, and they can be hosted in the SYSTEM-1 itself, with no computer required. You can even switch between the SYSTEM-1’s internal sounds and those of the hosted plug-in. We call this wizardry “PLUG-OUT,” and we’re pretty excited about it.

We think you’ll be excited too once you experience the supreme authenticity of the upcoming SH-101 soft synth, with the SYSTEM-1 providing an intuitive and fully automatic one-to-one control interface that just works. Let’s be honest: who could make a better plug-in version of a classic Roland synth than Roland? And the SH-101 is just the beginning—more PLUG-OUT synths are on the way.

The SYSTEM-1 looks great, and is designed to work seamlessly with other products in the AIRA series. To reduce spam, comments for posts older than one week are not displayed until approved, usually same day. Do not insult people. For items for sale, do not ask if it is still available. Check the auction link and search for the item. Auctions are from various sellers and expire over time. Posts remain for the pics and historical purposes. This site is meant to be a daily snapshot of some of what was out there in the world of synths.
