"Sleeping Pills is a feature-length motion picture that takes place in the 20th century's final days and follows a few American Gen-Xers' search for paradise.

The film is best described as "Shoegaze Cinema," as there is very little plot or dialog. Slow, long takes of the character wandering in a suburban landscape are typical here. (The director probably watched one too many Jim Jarmusch and Wong Kar-wai films.) Nonetheless, the film's ambient tone begins to hypnotize the viewer by the second reel.
The bittersweet moments nicely capture America's pre-Columbine and pre-911 innocence.

Incidentally, this is not an "indie" film. It is underground cinema at it's purest, as the filmmakers' punk attitude manifested this celluloid curiosity.

The feature was shot entirely on 35mm film in 1999 and - after lengthy post-production - premiered at the 2003 Cairo International Film Festival. It only had a handful of screening shortly thereafter and has been unavailable for a decade. A new DI (Digital Intermediate) re-master has been in-the-works and 2014 should bring it to light with a new Sleeping Pills DCP...

The musical soundtrack is a wonderful collection of IDM and Darkwave bands from the era - Testube, Penetrator, Project 1201, Multicast, Cute Yet Creepy and White Trash Compactor.
Soundtrack available from Glim Records:

The trailer music is Penetrator's track "Pinwheel."

The VoMeR rating is wA-10

See if you can spot Donny Osmond's cameo in this trailer!"
