波形をシェイプする

"アナログ・シンセと言えば「減算合成」に縛られているかのような先入観を抱きがちです­。ですが波形を複雑に歪ませ、倍音をアグレッシブに増殖させる回路もあります。その一­つが「Serge」システムの「Waveshaper」です。一つのモジュールの中に­同一の回路が3個並び、それぞれが2系統ずつのCVを受けられるので、合計6系統のC­Vで制御可能です。

「Waveshaper」は入力した波形の倍音構造にとても敏感に反応します。たとえ­ばのこぎり波のVCOをローパスのVCFにくぐらせた上で「Waveshaper」に­送ると「なんでこんなむちゃくちゃな歪み方をするんだ?」というほど倍音が加えられま­す。ソフトシンセ「Massive」の「Formant」モードにも似ています。

一見とてもシンプルな設計に見えるので見落としがちですが、とても強烈な回路です。「­Silent Way」プラグインを使えば、もちろんDAWからも制御可能になります。

This is a demonstration of how the Serge Triple Waveshaper module can be used to create a Dubstep formant wobble, meaning a Yoy sound.

The Waveshaper does not have much explicit documentation, so experimentation is required to crack its code. Using an oscilloscope reveals the non-linear ways of the Waveshaper. A saw-tooth like ramp acquires a bottom end. Passing the same ramp through a VCF first then into the Waveshaper produces unexpected results.

For those who are familiar with the VST "Massive" synth, this module offers a meaty counterpart to Massive's "Formant" mode.

The Silent Way plug-in by Expert Sleepers can be hooked up for DAW control and Dubstep.
