Improvisation LXX: DSI Poly Evolver Ethereal Pad
Published on Sep 4, 2016 Sacred Synthesis
"This is a rather long piece, showcasing a number of sounds - some old, and one new.
The reedy organ type patch is the Prophet '08, as is the high-pitched square waveform patch that repeats the main theme. The ethereal pad, naturally, is the Poly Evolver Keyboard, doing what it does best. I used this assortment of sounds because they offered a variety of contrasts, which allowed for relative clarity of parts, no matter which two at any point I played together. The particular timbres and pitch ranges meant the parts would always be distinguishable.
The PEK pad may sound familiar, but it's a new sound. The Evolver's digital wave shapes cover a plethora of timbres, and each one is distinctive enough when used statically. But I find that, when resonance and 2-pole filter sweeps are added, many of them begin to sound similar to each other. Ah well. The differences do exist, but perhaps it takes an exacting ear to appreciate such nuances. He who has ears, let him hear.
Musically, the piece consists of a simple melody repeated with little variation, interspersed with long dreamy segments; basically, Prophet '08 A sections and Poly Evolver B sections, back and forth. Frequent augmented fifths are used, giving the music a restlessness.
