Poly Evolver Keyboard: Massive Pad

Published on Jun 4, 2017 Sacred Synthesis

"This bit of music is only a sound demonstration. The Poly Evolver Keyboard is known for many things, but the massive pad is not one of them. The sound in this improvisation will hopefully improve the instrument's reputation for creating the sort of immensity that normally belongs to purely analog synthesizers.

The pad consists of two analog oscillators of pulse width modulation and two digital oscillators of sawtooth waves. The actual volume was never touched; the constant dynamic changes were created by changing either the low pass filter or the high pass. This was done either by the modulation wheel, an LFO, or a parameter. The pad itself has immense flexibility and can quickly move from being massive to almost inaudibly nasal. But throughout the entire piece, the high pass filter was set at least at "6" because, otherwise, the immensity of the lower end of the pad would be overwhelming.

The improvisation was played entirely on one Poly Evolver Keyboard/Rack combination, with bass parts added to the softer sections with the Hammond Pedalboard/Evolver Desktop combination.

By the way, I've only put away the Prophet '08 Keyboards and Modules for the time being, while I explore an all-Evolver sound. It's useful sometimes to focus entirely on only one instrument. But the P'08's will be back in the Music Room soon enough.
