Deru: Exploring microtonality on the Seaboard Block

Published on Jun 28, 2018 ROLI

"Benjamin Wynn, who produces under the name Deru, is an Emmy Award-winning composer for TV and film. He taught himself turntables, sampling, and hip hop production while he was a teenager in Chicago. His autodidactic mastery of electronic music eventually landed him a role as the composer for Avatar: The Last Airbender — followed many other commissions that he balances with his career as a producer and performer.

Microtonality — the deconstruction of acoustic sounds into particles of tonal purity — excites him and drives all of his recent projects. And if his hauntingly ambient tracks sound like the mood music for an space thriller, it’s only fitting: he’s exploring the outer edge of the universe of electronic expression."
