ROCKY - On the Obi

Published on Jul 1, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Beautiful theme I'm sure many here will know. The original is on piano; it could have been recorded here as a piano work, but the OB-6 has a great sense of nostalgia/charm/sentimentality to the character of its sound that, I feel, suits the mood of this theme perfectly.

I was originally playing with a string sound on the Obi, but - as often happens with synths - the direction changed. I went with the flow :)

That, plus I think it is nice to share the sound of this instrument. It isn't too popular, and most videos feature a sweep through sounds/filters rather than showing a single sound/idea.

Not that there's anything wrong with the former approach, of course. I like both approaches. But as a player, there's certainly an appeal in giving a sound a musical context.

PS if anyone is looking for the original track: it is called 'Alone in the Ring'.

PPS I intentionally set the LFO to drift the pitch on the VCO's. The subtle drift in pitch adds to the charm i.e. slightly warped old vinyl sound."
