OB6 Oriental/Ethnic Sound Design
Published on Oct 16, 2018 Kris Lennox
"Thought I'd share a short sample of a mid-stage project piece I was working on. The aim was an Oriental sound, but not overtly a single instrument. Therefore, the patch has hints of Koto/Shamisen - even some Indian touches, and Oud etc.
Sometimes the effect of a sound rather than a direct imitation is more effective i.e. a sound can be designed as a 'broad cultural brushstroke' rather than a very specific 'dart' (in which case it is often easier to just record the intended instrument in the first place).
OB6 filter is good for dialing in these kind of sounds quickly.
I don't like to use a label such as 'ethnic' as it can be interpreted negatively, but I'm sure readers understand the intention of the labelling is not derogatory.
As an aside, I was recently interviewed for a German music website - anyone interested can find the piece here - http://movingclassics.tv/classicpeopl...
Lengthy written interview if you have time to spare!
Best
Kris"
