Ensoniq Mirage: Soundprocess - the forgotten OS

Published on Jan 28, 2020 MIDERA

"Soundprocess is a synthesizer engine in the Ensoniq Mirage. Everyone knows the Mirage as that hex-based, hard to use sampler. But what most people don't realize is that an alternative OS for the Mirage was made that's even more confusing than the original ones that turns it into a 4-oscillator synthesizer! This is not for the faint of heart. I am barely scratching the surface of this 'synthesizer'.

The structure is such that you have a program. Inside that program are patches. But don't think that just because you have selected a patch you are editing the patch. You could be editing a different patch. You have to make sure you're within the right split number within the program and have selected the same patch as the one you're editing. Anyway, it's a pretty cool OS, but it is hard to navigate.

I believe this OS was created by someone named Mark Cecys. Whoever they were, they did not place an acknowledgement section in the user guide, but it is easily available so anyone is welcome to download it and review for themselves."

  1. So, there was a Quantum-like synthesizer upgrade available 'way back when and the information only becomes widespread in 2020. Typical.

  2. I recently purchase a Ensoniq Mirage rack "as is" for a really cheap price. Replaced the fuse and recapped the power supply and it works great. I will never part with it now that I installed a Goteck drive with the complete Ensoniq library. Just took a look and found the Sound Process boot image!! Will try it out :)

  3. In case anyone is wondering, the creator of this OS —Mark Cecys— went on to work for Microsoft, and Apple, primarily working on speech recognition and synthesis. He unfortunately passed away in 2009. There's an interview with the creator in issue 39 of the 'Transoniq Hacker' newsletter, in which he goes into some detail about how it was created. The newsletter is available here: http://www.buchty.net/~buchty/ensoniq/transoniq_hacker/
