1. Found Time | Ambient Modular Synthesizer | (w/ Morphagene, QuBit ChordV2, Magneto, Clouds & Guitar)
'Found Time

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

I've had this patch sat on my desk for a few weeks now and am very happy to have finally gotten around to recording a few iterations of it and pulling it all together into this arrangement.

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch Notes:

Like my previous video this is made up of a single patch on the modular which was multitracked into logic and accompanied by some piano (in the form or the wonderful @Spitfire Audio originals Felt Piano). A few versions of the patch (specifically the Guitar being played back by morphagene) were recorded. One at original pitch and then one tuned down an octave.

Piano was recorded initially in Logic and then looped longside a pulsing 'bass' note coming from Rings and a dusty drone from plaits (plaits is receiving lots of noise modulation courtesy of quantum rainbow). This repeating structure formed the basis of the whole track.

From this point a guitar loop was recorded into logic (@Fender Stratocaster through Strymon Iridium directly to DAW). This loop was then chopped and loaded into morphagene as a reel.

@MAKEN0ISE Morphagene playback was synced via hermod and clocked by PNW. For the detuned guitar random modulation PNW into organize randomly arranged the slices in the reel giving a random playback pattern. The stereo output from MG was then passed to QPAS for filtering and multing. The band pass band was recorded into the daw with the smile pass being sent to Magneto (pitch shifting delay) and clouds.

Hemod is sequencing @Qu - Bit ChordV2 in its three voice (triad) poly mode. The voices are each going to a channel of Veils with the VCA's being opened and closed by enveloped generated by 3 channels of Zadar. The summed voices are then being sent to DistingEX for filtering and some subtle chorus.

Extra modulation of being applied throughout the patch using Quantum Rainbow, OCHD, PNW and Marbles.

All tracks were then mixed and EQ's and arranged in logic. Reverb and delay applied using @OTOMACHINES BAM and BIM and then 'mastering' was carried out using Izotope Ozone.

Once again.....

Thank you for stopping by and listening.

2. Pools | Ambient Modular Sketch | (w/ QuBit ChordV2, Magneto, Morphagene, Lekko and Guitar)
Pools

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

It's been a while...again!
Here is something I am calling a 'Sketch'. The skeleton of a new track that I have been working on, minimally constructed, recorded and mixed so as to allow me to share it with you without it needing to be in its final for. Videos continue to remain few and far between on the channel for the time being as I continue to be very busy in other aspects of life. Thank you all for continuing to listen to and support the music I do manage to put out into the world.

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch Notes:

This sketch is made up of a single patch on the modular which was multitracked into logic and accompanied by some piano (in the form or the wonderful @Felt Instruments Lekko) and guitar.

In the modular @Qu - Bit Chord V2 is being sequenced in Chord mode by Hermod. 4 Gates from Hermod + @ALM TV PNW are triggering envelopes within Zadar which are then being sent to 4 VCA's, each of which is handing one of Chord's voices. Voices 1-3 are all being summed and sent to QPAS for filtering. These three voices form the Low - Mid - High synth lines that are gradually brought in at the beginning and then maintained throughout. Voice 4 from chord is being sent to Magneto in order to generate the 'reverse' like component that accompanies the piano at the very beginning of the track. Plaits is droning in inharmonic string mode with pitch CV being sent to it from Hermod and its level input being modulated via an envelope generated in the 2hp ADSR. This is then sent to clouds for some granular delay goodness. A version of the Piano chords (which open the track) was bounced out and loaded into morphagene to generate the chopped and pitched piano that is heard throughout. General modulation is being supplied by Marbles and PNW and distributed around the patch.Guitar echoing the piano chords was recorded directly into logic via the @strymon Iridium pedal as an overdub once the modular component had been recorded in.

All tracks were then minimally mixed and EQ's, reverb and delay applied using @OTOMACHINES BAM and BIM and then 'mastering' was carried out using Izotope Ozone.

Once again.....

Thank you for stopping by and listening.

3. Currents | Ambient Patch | (Felt Instruments Lekko, Qu-Bit Chord, Plaits, Magneto & Morphagene) Currents
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

Hi everyone :) hope you are all doing well. I finally got around to recording and uploading another long-form track over here on YouTube. I've been busy recently, trying to focus on recording more ideas for songs and unfortunately focussing a little less on the video content. On top of this, I am also currently in my final year of graduate school and so a lot of my time and energy is rightfully ending up on that project.

Also... incase you missed I recently released a single called 'Impossible Object' via Mystery Circles which is now available on Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple Music. You can find Links to find that track in the banner at the top of my channel.

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch notes: This patch started out by generating the droning chords that come in at the very beginning of the track. For these I played a chord sequence (@Squarp Instruments Hemod sequencing @Qu - Bit Chord V2 in unison poly mode) through @strymon Magneto (in looping delay mode) with gates from Marbles toggling the pitch shift on and off. This chord sequence was then recorded to @MAKEN0ISE Morphagene, spliced at chord boundaries and pitched down for playback. Morph parameter was then used to intermittently pitch up and reverse these chords. @ALM TV Pamela's NW sequenced the chord changes via gates sent to the Morphagene's shift input. The output of the Morphagene was then filtered in stereo by QPAS (being modulated by intsruo OCHD) The high granular piano was recorded in logic using the VST instrument 'Lekko' by @Felt Instruments and then bounced out for playback/looping by the Super Disting ex by @Expert Sleepers.
The main voices that remain are Rings and Chord V2. Rings is being filtered by the Disting EX stereo filter algorithm and being passed to Magneto in echo mode with marbles again toggling pitch shift on and off. Chord V2 plays the main wavetable voice, here Hemod is sending polyphonic CV to Chord, and triggering envelopes generated by Zadar. Random chance, octaves and scale effects are bringing variety to the sequence being sent to chord. Each of the envelopes generated by zadar are slightly different, one long, one short and one medium length. The mix output on Chord is being patched back into the Waveform CV for some self patching modulation. CV from Marbles is randomly changing the active bank of chord via the Bank cv input. Finally, plaits is plating back a simple sequence using its inharmonic string mode, this is then being passed to Norns (Compass Script) for the barely audible granular string texture beneath everything.

Unlike my previous tracks this was performed as a patch, with each voice being multi-tracked out into logic separately. Following the recording an arrangement was organised. The final mix was then passed to @OTOMACHINES BIM & BAM for stereo delay and reverb processing.

Basic mastering was carried out using Izotope Ozone 9 before being exported for video editing in DaVinci Resolve.

Once again.....

Thank you for stopping by and listening.

4. Shallow | Ambient Improvisation | (w/ 16n Faderbank, 4ms Ensemble Oscillator, DistingEX, Magneto)
Shallow
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---
This is the first patch and improvisation using the 16n Faderbank and Ensemble Oscillator from 4ms alongside the other regular players in my current setup.

Improvised elements: The 4ms Ensemble Oscillator is playing back custom intervals and being filtered by QPAS. 4 channels of the 16n are being used here to improvide the chords being played as well as the timbre. One channel is modulating the route parameter of the EnsOsc raising and lowering the route pitch. A second channel is patched to the filter frequency of the QPAS and as a result is being used to fade the 4ms EnsOsc in and out during the performance. Another 2 channels are modulating the Twist and Warp input on the EnsOsc and thus modulating the timbre of the oscillators.

Sequenced/Pre-arranged elements: Marbles here is sequencing Rings which is being processed by uClouds in looping delay mode. Hermod is sending a simple sequence over to plaits which is being processed by magneto in its looping delay + pitch shifting mode. Hermod is also sequencing (via midi) the super disting ex in its multisample mode, which is being sent directly to a stereo mixer channel for added EQ and Reverb. Morpagene is playing back some acoustic guitar lines that have been sampled, spliced and are being mangled through modulation of the Morph, Gene and Slide parameters.

As well as being used to modulate EnsOsc and QPAS the 16n is also being used to modulate Rings Brightness, VCA's controlling levels of Morphagene output channels and VCA's controlling levels of DistingEX output channels and as a result is being manipulated to bring elements in and out throughout the performance.

All audio signals were mixed in a basic sense using a Mackie1202 mixer and reverb was added courtesy of the Strymon Big Sky. The track was recorded live to logic using a Focusrite 2i2 and then subject to some gentle for EQ and Mastering before exporting.

Video shot on Panasonic G80 and edited in DaVinci Resolve 16.

5. Bound | Ambient | (w/Disting EX, Zadar, Hermod, Digitakt, Morphagene, Magneto and Chord V2)
Bound
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---
It's been a while since I've managed to sit down and record a new video performance. I'm not entirely sure what has been preventing me from being as productive as usual recently.... I think 2020 might just be taking its toll on me if I'm honest.

I really liked this track as it started to come together during this past week. It really gave me this feeling of hope and excitement for some reason and I just knew that regardless of whether it was perfect, finished or even good I wanted to document it and share it here.

So here it is :)

The patch is my usual go to voices really:

1) Disting Ex on tape saturated Piano playing throughout. This voice is also being mult'd out to Morphagene to generate the high pitched twinkly noises which come in towards the end.

2)Plaits is on bass, using the 2 operator FM mode. This is being passed straight to Magneto in pitch shifting delay mode which allows for the generation of the higher asynchronous melody which is brought in towards the beginning of the track.

3)Rings is being sent some random quantized CV courtesy of Hermod and is then being passed to clouds before hitting the mixer. (the same goes for 2hp Pluck)

4)Chord is being sent a random quantized CV and Gate sequence (Via Shifty) which is splitting this single CV source out into 4 independent CV and allocating each to one of the 4 Chord voices (in unison poly mode).

PNW is there to keep everything in time and Zadar and DivKidxIntruo Ochd are both working together here to distribute modulation throughout the whole patch.

Signals were mixed in a basic sense using a Mackie1202 mixer and reverb was added courtesy of the Strymon Big Sky. The track was recorded live to logic using a Focusrite 2i2 and then subject to some gentle for EQ and Mastering before exporting.

Video shot on Panasonic G80 and edited in DaVinci Resolve 16.

6. Grow | Generative Ambient | (w/ Hermod, Expert Sleepers Super Disting Ex, Magneto, Morphagene, QPAS)
Grow
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---
Having been struggling to find inspiration and excitement in making music recently I decided to play around once more with the ideas of generative music making.

Here I recorded a series of simple melodic/rhythmic tracks into the squarp Hermod and then on each of them utilised the combination of the Random, Scale, Swing and Chance effects in order to turn these programmed lines into slowly and subtly morphing parts.

Initially one of these tracks was used to sequence a string part using the SD multisample algorithm of the Expert Sleepers Disting Ex. This part was then looped using the Strymon magneto in order to form the base of the track.

Then over the top of this 3 additional generative layers were added.
1) Was a combination of Rings + Plaits (Inharmonic Strings excited by dust noise) both being heavily filtered by QPAS with a relatively high resonance setting and further processed by clouds in looping delay mode.
2) A semi-generative piano part was layered again using the SD multisample algorithm of the Disting Ex which was then being processed by Morphagene (Recording on and off under the control of PNW).
3)Some field recordings were recorded to cassette loop and added into the mix for some further background ambience.

Signals were mixed in a basic sense using a Mackie1202 mixer and reverb was added courtesy of the Strymon Big Sky. The track was recorded live to tape using a Marantz PMD/CP230 stereo cassette deck and finally bounced to logic for EQ and Mastering.

Video shot on Panasonic G80 and edited in DaVinci Resolve 16.

7. Awake | Ambient | (w/ Expert Sleepers Disting EX, Morphagene, Magneto, Hermod, Rings and Plaits)
Awake
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

This track is built completely around the factory samples provided with the expert sleepers super disting EX utilising the multisample algorithm.

Firstly chords were recorded into morphagene using one of the string sample sets provided with the disting. These chords were then spliced at the boundaries between the chords using timed gates coming from PNW (Pamela's New Workout). These chords are looped throughout and being processed by Clouds. Looping envelopes from Zadar are controlling the levels of left and right morphagene channels.

Second, a piano line was sequenced by hermod and then recorded into the 1min loop buffer of Magneto. Splice in/out of the recording was timed using gates from PNW for temporal precision. This was then looped and pitched up and down using the pitch shift delay mode.

Finally a second set of string were sequenced by hermod and sent in stereo to Magneto in order to play over the frozen piano loop that was recorded.

These parts were brought in and out throughout the recording.

Marbles was also sequencing Rings and Plaits to add some (barely noticeable) notes here and there. These were both heavily filtered by QPAS before being output directly without processing.

Signals were mixed in a basic sense using a Mackie1202 mixer and reverb was added courtesy of the Strymon Big Sky. The track was recorded live to tape using a Marantz PMD/CP230 stereo cassette deck and finally bounced to logic for EQ and Mastering.

8. Echo Voice | Ambient | (w/ Hermod, ChordV2, Morphagene, Magneto, Tape Loop, Rings and Plaits)
Echo Voice

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

This piece is built primarily off of Rings and Morphagene.
Morphagene is playing back 2 vocal samples (courtesy of my very talented girlfriend). Both C notes, one an 'ooooo' and one an 'aahhhhh'. These were imported into the Morphagene as two independant slices within a single reel and then pitched to a D using varispeed. The slices are being changed from 'ooooo' to 'aahhh' throughout by one of the gate outputs from marbles. The droning D note from morphagene is then being passed to clouds (in granular mode) with the pitch of the grains being sequenced by one of the CV outputs from marbles. These pitched grains form the higher register cello/violin like string tones throughout.

Rings is being sequenced by hermod and recorded into the strymon magneto in tape loop mode with pitch shifting delay active. These form the multiple rings voices heard throughout. After being recorded into the loop the sample was pitched down by an octave using the speed control with Tape age and warble were introduced in order to add a little bit of colouration.

Qu-Bit ChordV2 is working in major auto-harmonisation mode and being sequenced by a single channel of Hermod. A single channel of Zadar is providing the envelope to sculpt the output of ChordV2. QPAS is filtering here with the bandpass output being utilised.

Plaits is in the particle noise model and is offering the low register Kickdrum/rummble voice heard throughout. The level is being modulated by Intruo Ochd and the output is being passed to QPAS for filtering before being output.

The modular level signals above are all being mixed in stereo using the KnobFarm Hyrlo mixer and sent to a single stereo mixer channel where reverb was added using an auxillary FX send.

Towards the end of the track (once the chords are introduced) a tape loop is faded in. This is a repeating phrase recorded using a Martin&Co 00-15 acoustic guitar. The output of the tape player is being sent to a single mono channel of the mixer with reverb being added again via an auxiliary send.

Signals were mixed in a basic sense using a Mackie1202 mixer and reverb was added courtesy of the beautiful Strymon BigSky (cloud algorithm). The track was recorded live into Logic ProX via a Focusrite 2i2 and mastered using Izotope Ozone 9.

Video shot on Panasonic G80 and edited in DaVinci Resolve 16.

9. Moments | Ambient | (w/ Morphagene, Martin&Co 00-15m, Plaits, ChordV2, Rings, Magneto & Norns)
Moments
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

This track began with the simple droning bass generated here by QuBit Chord V2, sculpted by 4 envelopes from Xaoc Devices Zadar, filtered by QPAS and processed by Clouds in looping delay mode. Over the top of this pitched noise was added using Mutable Instruments Plaits in the inharmonic strings mode (excited by particle noise in the absence of a trigger input).

A Morphagene reel I recorded using my acoustic guitar was then layered over the top of this bed. The sample was a slow extended finger picked pattern that was then played back at half speed and clocked by Pamela's New Workout. The morph function was manually modulated throughout the recording of the track in order to bring in pitched up and reversed genes.

Rings and 2hp Pluck was were then added into the mix to add some plucky notes. Rings was sent to Strymon Magneto in echo mode which was receiving gates from Pamela's New Workout both clocking the delay repeats and reversing the tape direction.

Hermod is acting as master clock for PNW and sequencing ChordV2, Plaits, Rings and the 2hp Pluck.

PNW and InstruoXDivKid Ochd are both distributing modulation throughout the patch.

Everything from the modular was output as a single stereo mix to the mixer where reverb was added using the Strymon BigSky.

A mono auxiliary send was then used to route a version of the mix out to Fates DAC (DIY Monome Norns) which was running the asynchronous looper script called 'Cheat Codes'. This was used to create a final 'voice' which was brought in towards the middle of the track. The filters associated with each of the loops were manually animated using the knobs of the Fates in order to generate the higher pitched swells that come in and out.

As per usual the whole thing was recorded live as a single stereo mix into Logic Pro X for EQ and mastering using Ozone 8 (Elements) and L3 Ultramaximizer.

Finally....

Thank you for stopping by and listening.

10. Bide | Ambient | (w/ Lekko by Felt Instruments, Morphagene, QuBit Chord V2 & Strymon Magneto)
Bide
--- -- --- --- --- --- ---
This piece centres entirely around a morphagene reel made using the Felt Instruments 'Lekko' sample library. 3 slices were made each containing the various 'sections' on the track and these were manually cycled through by pressing the morphagene shift button in order to progress the piece. The repeating arpeggio is generated by the QuBit Chord V2, droning in b minor with Pamela's New Workout supplying the rhythmic envelopes. This is being filtered by QPAS's low pass filter cores along side some random plucks of Rings and finally passed on to clouds in looping delay mode. The granular/particulate voice is Plaits being played in the inharmonic string mode, sequenced by marbles and processed by magneto in echo mode. The whole track was performed and recorded live in a single take and lightly processed in Logic Pro X using Waves J37, Ozone 8 (elements) and L3 Ultramaximizer.

Thank you for stopping by and listening.

Destruction (Variation 1)

--- -- --- --- --- --- ---

Composed and performed on the Elektron Digitone, Digitakt and my minimal modular setup featuring Mutable Instruments Plaits, Rings and Clouds all processed by the wonderful Strymon Big Sky reverb.

--- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch Notes:

Digitone: Intermittent high pitched pad: each Digitone track is playing back various notes from the the C harmonic minor scare. Slow modulation is being applied to the VCA level. Each track is being modulated out of phase with each other meaning that tracks slowly come in and out throughout. Track 1 and 2 are panned right Tracks 3 and 4 panned left giving stereo spread.

Digitakt: All 8 tracks are playing back different sampled piano tracks. some are detuned, some are played back in reverse and some are played back forward. There are manually faded in and out using the Digitakt's master faders.

Modular: Marbles, clocked by Digitakt, is randomly sequencing both Plaits and Rings by sampling notes from the C harmonic minor scale. These are being passed to rings and then mixed with the Digitone and Digitakt. Both the brightness of Rings and the and the Morph of plaits are being manually modulated throughout. Marbles is also adding modulation via its 'Y' output to Plaits 'Morph' and Clouds 'Position' and Rings 'Dampening'. Clouds is being clocked by Marbles t2 output.

Strymon Big Sky: Using the cloud algorithm.

19. Low - Ambient - (Digitone/Digitakt/Modular)
Composed and performed on the Elektron Digitone and Digitakt accompanied by Mutable Instruments Plaits, Rings and Clouds all processed by the wonderful Strymon Big Sky reverb.

--- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch Notes:

Digitone: Bass and Mid frequency melody that is faded in at the beginning. The filter on each track is being modulated slightly differently making certain frequency components of the patch to be accented and then filtered.

Digitakt: Digitakt is playing back noise sampled from the frozen recording buffer of clouds. Tracks 3, 4 and 5 are playing back a note (C) sampled from an acoustic guitar and then played back in reverse and resequenced using the chromatic mode of the digitakt. Track 6 is playing back the same note, resequenced using the chromatic playback mode, forming the slow repetitive ticking that is faded in and out throughout.

Modular: Marbles sequencing plaits in Formant Granular Oscillator mode as well as Rings in Modal mode. Rings structure all the way up resulting in the bell tone used throughout.

Strymon Big Sky: Using the cloud algorithm.

--- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Composed and performed on the Elektron Digitone and Digitakt accompanied by Mutable Instruments Plaits, Rings and Clouds all processed by the wonderful Strymon Big Sky reverb.

--- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Patch Notes:

Digitone: All 4 tracks are playing back single notes across different octaves. T1 lowest register, T2 and 3 mid register, and T4 higher register. Parameter locks on the trigger probability mean that these single notes sometimes overlap to form chords and sometimes are played individually.

Digitakt: Digitakt is playing back bird song and the sounds of a freely running stream.

Modular: Marbles is being clocked by the Digitakt and sequencing both Rings and Plaits. Rings is being played in modal resonator mode with structure, brightness and damping being manually modulated. 2hp ADSR is being triggered by marbles t1 and sculpting the VCA level of Plaits in formant oscillator mode. Marbles is also modulating Clouds size parameter and position as well as self-modulating its own rate, t-Bias and spread. Rate and t-Bias are being manually attenuated throughout.

27. Reflections -- Ambient -- Digitakt
--Reflections--

I finally got around to trying out Aldo's MIDI Loopback technique with the Digitakt and had a lot of fun.

I didn't go too deep with it, I just used it to generate fade in and fade outs for the piece. Some panning and volume modulation, as well as pattern changes and random mute/unmute events.

The overall structure of this piece is very simple. There are 4 free running piano loops detuned and being played back either forward or in reverse. A free running guitar loop making up the twinkly higher register. A sequenced melodic line that has a random chance of being unmuted and re-muted. Finally 2 samples of Carion Crow calls being played back as free running loops.

I'm definitely going to be exploring using this technique more in some of my future videos and songs. It opens up a lot of very cool options for the Digitakt.

If you haven't already found Aldo's channel then you should definitely check it out. There is a lot of great content there, including a tutorial on how to set up the MIDI loopback for yourself.

28. Rain Fall - Ambient - Digitakt
A little ambience to start the day

Digitakt here playing back 4 guitar loops simultaneously with random variations in start point added into the mix.

Sometimes you just have to let these things play themselves.
