Emu UAF clone demo

video upload by zack dagoba

"This is a demo of a desktop module based on the legendary Emu Universal Active Filter. The module here is not an exact replica, it uses more modern circuitry and has a few things that are different to the way the original was set up, although the panel is the same as the original, so this makes it very confusing! For example, the HP / BP / LP outputs have their own attenuators, absent on the original, and also it has some changes to the CV inputs, the way the Notch Frequency knob works, as well as the Course and Fine knobs. Anyway, it's a fine sounding unit, and its been quite fun working out what everything does"

  1. This module use the bottom half circuit of the 'Vedic Scapes Model 2040' Buchla format module.

  2. PS: It does not use modern circuit, for instance a SSM2020 at its core.

But per the Emu schematics a second version of the UAF was also based around a SSM2020.

The original circuit/module behind this panel was from 'Exclusively Analogue'.

The module did start doing weird behavior two weeks after i bought it,and in the end stopped working .

Opening the module revealed pour pcb construction, solderig and crap assembly, with amateuristic wired potmeters unlike the original Bourns pot pcb mount assemblies.

Only the panel and knob where kept, replaced the circuitboard and all pots with plastic conductive versions.

    1. Very interesting. It all seems to work now, albeit in the quirky ways I describe in the video 😁. I think it was serviced by Tony Wride of Exclusively Analogue fairly recently 👍

  4. As far i can see it works like it always has been working,no service needed.

It works a bit quirky because the panel functions has been adapted (wired to) to the available functions of the circuit. (notch is just taken mix between LP & HP (w/o buffering) and the switch function has been implemented 'creatively' with the inputs jacks at the back,i think its just cv inputs, some jacks on the front have switching functions (normalized) with a feedback from the out (audio to cv),but i can't remember that if its the case.

    1. Yes that seems correct - did you once own this actual module? I can't remember where I got it from - it was a long time ago, before I got my Emu Modular - which has one original UAF with a 1122 module and a second Exclusively Analogue UAF made in 2012

  5. Yes just checked inside and there is an SSM2020 - dual VCA as designed by Dave Rossum? There is also a CEM3328 24db LPF chip
