Mass Layoffs at Moog Music?

via Jerry Farell on Facebook

"Moog about to change for ever, a sad day for their team and all of us!

I walked down to the moog factory today to talk to them about selling to InMusic, and most of their team was in the parking lot upset. They had just been laid off. A suprize to everyone today but they did know something was coming. The moog store is open, they said maybe thru next week, and it was ok for me to take some pictures. They said moog was about to close down so selling was the only way to keep it going. The Asheville location will remain open for now only making a limited number of higher end products but the majority will be made over seas and of lower quality. That is what they think is happening anyway. Very sad day for that crew.

Until now all moog was hand made in Asheville NC and of the highest quality.

If you don't know about moog and what they do, read their history, it's pretty awesome. @moog @madeinasheville

Update:

And a statement from Moog:

"We want to thank everyone who has reached out over the last several days to check in on us. We also want to share some important information from the Moog factory.

Last Friday, we parted ways with a number of our skilled production team members. For those of us still with Moog, these employees represent friends, siblings, spouses. This hasn’t been easy for anyone. Please know that these folks were provided continued compensation and benefits as they plan their next career steps.

It has always been our mission to manufacture Moog instruments in our local community.

Moog Music headquarters will remain in Asheville, NC. We will continue to design, engineer, service, and manufacture instruments here. We will also manufacture a selection of our instruments with trusted partners who are dedicated to maintaining the quality and sound of Moog products. Some of these partners have already been helping us for years to create instruments you know and love.

These changes are necessary for the future of Moog as we continue to face the ongoing challenges of manufacturing electronic instruments in America.

We have a talented group of employees in Asheville who are committed to bringing you the best-sounding electronic instruments in the world. We’re here because we love these instruments, and we will continue to stay focused on developing inspiring musical tools for our creative community.

We’re grateful for the passion and care you have shown us. We ask that you please continue to show consideration to our employees and keep an open mind as we put the finishing touches on some of our most innovative instruments yet."

  1. Who did not see this coming? Anyone?

  2. It is mainly the fault from Bob Moog's daughter. Her main goal was money money money, they get what they deserve.

    1. What are talking about? The only Moog daughter that is involved in anything is the one who runs the Bob Moog Foundation, which is separate from Moog Music.

    2. This comment is idiotic and slanderous. Michelle runs the foundation and has no connection or monetary involvement w/ Moog Music at all.

  4. Michelle Moog - Koussa is a dear friend and an amazing person, who has done more to honor the Moog legacy of both her Dad and Moog synth artists than anyone. The ignorance and arrogance on display here from whoever posted this libel, in this day and age is astounding and, at the same time, not surprising. Friends, fans and professionals who live and thrive on Moog instruments might wish you hell, but clearly you're already there. Best wishes.

  5. Sucks for then but this is what happens. And cut it out about the made in USA. It was Assembled in USA just like 99% of every US based companies that make electronic musical instruments. PCB Assemblies and electronic parts all come from China. As they went on Im sure even metal work moved to china as prices and quality for us manufactures parts generally sucks in comparison. So they have people taking parts made inorher country and sticking them into enclosure and testing & calibrated - no different than any other small to medium sized business

    1. Which China, though? It makes a difference. My laptop is from Taiwan. 60% of the world's high end chips are produced in Taiwan. That's one of the major reasons mainland China does not invade. It would enrage the rest of the world against them. Also, Taiwan and China do lots of business together, so the rivalry also is a lot of theater.

  6. Probably just as well they get made in China. Prices on their gear has not ever been competitive with the rest of the market all because they have brand recognition.

  8. Knew it was over as soon as they wasted money painting a hideous mural on the side of their building. Hipsters have no practical business sense.

  10. This is the result of Behringer ripping stuff off and under cutting the competition. In one word: Capitalism. You buy Behringer? You get what you fuckin deserve.

    1. Damned straight, I love Behringer! I'm not shelling out 5k for a "bOuTiQuE" minimoog when I can get the same thing for a couple hundred!

  11. Why does being made overseas equal "lower quality"? That is the kind of 1960s mentality that killed off the US manufacturing industry by the 1980s. Moog, if they wanted, could require that the foreign assemblers use the same components and test procedures as they used in the US.

  12. You can bet your bottom dollar the price of Moog gear will not decrease, however the price of their profit margin will increase. That is business after all.
