Audio comparison - Korg Prologue 16 vs Kodamo Mask1

video upload by j bowman

"Which do you prefer?

Five patches. Each patch is an 8 bar sequence played twice. First time round you hear Prologue in left channel, Mask1 in right channel. Second time round you hear the Prologue in mono. Third time round you hear the Mask1 in mono.

Patch 1 - strings, dual layered two saw tooth oscillators with release, no filter, no modulation. No FX.

Patch 2 - mono bass, two saw tooth oscillators with filter envelope, no modulation. No FX.

Patch 3 - brass, two saw tooth oscillators with filter envelope and resonance. Vibrato. No FX.

Patch 4 - squares, two square oscillators with release with filter envelope, and filter is closed and opened with the modwheel. Vibrato. Each synth's reverb is used.

Patch 5 - square sweep, single square oscillator with filter envelope. Vibrato. Each synth's reverb is used."

  1. Having a Prologue 16 leaves me leaning more toward the Korg, which sounds richer. The Kodamo sounds more fluty. In these sounds they are virtually the same. The Korg is preferred since one can be obtained for about 2/3 the price of a Kodamo (although as time goes by the diminishing number of Prologues are becoming more dear; I bought mine some months ago for much less.) Comparing the two this way is a bit of a disservice. The special type oscillators of the Kodamo might be better put to use for unique sounds. Not having played one, what those sounds could be would be a matter of conjecture. If the Kodamo is not capable of creating unique sounds beyond the standard analog, then why invent it? It would just be another virtual analog with fancily named components, in the same league as the Novation PEAK and Summit. That it costs considerably more than a used Prologue 16 puts it at a disadvantage. That the Prologue also has an infinitely programmable digital voice puts the Korg away ahead in the desirability spectrum. Unless the Kodamo can build a niche of its own it is going to fall to the wayside.

    1. Thanks for the comment. Each of these synths can play in a realm that the other can't reach, so this comparison was deliberately designed to compare them in an area where they can compete. I was surprised by how similar they can sound. The Mask1 is certainly capable of creating sounds beyong the standard analog, but so is the Prologue. The architecture of the two synths is very different, and patching on each is a very different experience. I can see that not everyone would get along with the Mask1 user interface, but personally I love it. You should give one a try if you get a chance!

PS - the other thing I would say is that so far the designer of the Mask1 is much more committed to the instrument than Korg, who seem to have abandoned it shortly after launch. That's a real shame for the Prologue, because there was a lot of potential (in particular with the user oscillator) which will likely now never be realised.
