The Crumar Spirit is one analog monosynth with a lofty pedigree. It was primarily designed by none other than Dr. Robert A. Moog, the man who founded Moog Music and put creative synthesis on the map, changing the course of modern music in the process. The original Spirit was produced at the Crumar factory starting in 1981, and it is said that only 100 units were ever made, making it a rare commodity and a hot topic of discussion among synth enthusiasts. Now, four decades later, the Spirit has risen again, with Crumar meticulously replicating every facet of the classic synthesizer. Naturally, the circuits are all analog and employ vintage-spec components, with the only modifications being an internal MIDI/CV converter and a smooth-playing modern synth-action keyboard. Housed in a robust, hardwood-clad chassis festooned with knobs, rocker switches, and sliders, the new Crumar Spirit rocks the looks, feel, and sound of a quintessential analog monosynth.

Two powerful oscillators with sync
Crumar’s diligence has resulted in a powerful-sounding instrument with more than a small sonic resemblance to historic monophonic synthesizers of the late ‘70s and the immediacy of real-time, hands-on control you would expect of such a design, including extensive rear-panel CV/audio/pedal I/O. The Spirit’s signal path starts with its two beefy oscillators that provide the grunt to craft truly impressive sounds. Oscillator A offers a choice of six waveforms, while Oscillator B features the same waveform selections, plus octave range and interval controls. A Sync switch is positioned between the two oscillators for those searing lead sounds that were all the rage in the ’80s.

Extensive real-time control
The Spirit’s Filter Envelope section includes the standard ADSR controls, as does the Loudness Envelope, which includes a VCA Bypass/Normal switch. Equipped with A and B oscillators, Ring modulation, Noise level, and Filter/ADSR Path sliders, the Audio Mixer section is quick and easy to navigate. It also offers a convenient Brightness knob for quick overall tonal fine-tuning. Other controls include Cutoff, Resonance, Slope, and keyboard Tracking; a shaper section; and a Mod X section with Arpeggiator, Mod Source, and LFO/S&H Rate controls. The left cheek of the 37-note keyboard hosts three wheels for Pitch Bend, Mod X, and Shaper. It all adds up to a masterfully designed instrument that can take your creative pathways and music in many directions. From monster basses to celestial pads to blistering leads, the Crumar Spirit can do it all.
