Make Noise Trio: 50 Combo Patches for Strega+0coast+0ctrl. No Talk Sound Demo. Live Jam/Performance

video upload by Anton Anru

"VOLTAGE IN SHADOW is a collection of 50 combo patches and patterns for a semi-modular system by Make Noise: 0-COAST + 0-CTRL + STREGA. It includes textures, basses, leads, drones, chords, percussion, and FXs.
💎 There is a wide range of timbres inside the pack: soft and bright, musical and experimental, harmonic and FX-like, cyclic and generative, slow and fast, analog- and digital-style, dry and atmospheric, clean and distorted.

🦠 This is one of the most complex works I’ve done. It required a lot of time and effort, but I also received huge pleasure and inspiration while working with such interesting and unique devices.
The patches turned out to be very fluid, dynamic, and non-static — largely due to the “alive” and sensitive nature of the synths. However, this also creates some difficulty when recreating the patches from images: even small changes in knob positions can affect the final result.

💡 Repeating the exact melody/sequence on 0-CTRL from a picture is almost impossible. I tried to indicate the values as accurately as possible, but it’s important to warn that the patch may not sound exactly like in the demo, due to the liveliness of the synths, complex modulations, and the generative/chaotic nature of some patches or their parts.

🕹 The key idea behind the soundset is a high level of interconnection. In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are intertwined — they cannot exist independently:
🔹 They modulate each other with envelopes and modulators.
🔹 Trigger interactions, clock/rhythm, run/stop, and direction modulations break predictable patterns.
🔹 Audio signals from oscillators or audio-rate outputs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies, intervals, or wild experimental inharmonic tones.
🔹 Alternatively, they can be used as audio sources routed into another synth to be processed through its unique modules — giving the signal a “second life.”
🔹 The synths can also modulate the sequencer (0-CTRL), which in turn affects the synths.
At the same time, each synth plays a distinct and defined role — it’s not a sound mess, but a tightly integrated system where the synths work in close cooperation.

👆 0-CTRL PRESSURE is used in all patches. It plays a role similar to a ModWheel on traditional synths: it can make the sound brighter, extend envelopes, increase modulation depth or speed, and add distortion.
0-CTRL INTERRUPT TOUCHPLATE should be turned off to avoid stopping the sequence.
By default, the 0-CTRL pattern direction is set to forward in my examples.

✌️ Also, play with the STREGA touchplates — this is another fast way to add expression and temporary changes.
🎛 And of course, freely turn all parameters on the devices during performance — this way, a single patch can become the basis for a track arrangement (or even a full track), evolving over several minutes.

📒 The soundset is delivered as a PDF document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, which parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during performance. If you make all settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn a lot about the synths and discover their true depth.

🔗 To recreate these patches, you need up to 20 patch cables plus a splitter/multiplier (“star”).
🎧 There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset.

🛎 In the video demo, I added a few simple reverbs/delays to enhance the stereo image. They do not alter the sound of the patches. There are no external sounds — everything comes only from the Make Noise Trio."
