JSH DX5 Pro Rhythm Mini Synth w/ Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Curious how this differs from the D-2. You can find some pics of the inside of the DX5 here. There were a ton of other brands and model numbers as well. These remind me of the Atari Punk Console of the time. Tons of makes and models of the same or similar design. These appear to all be branded products vs. boutique DIY.

DX-5 via this auction

Thought this was interesting. I always assumed the various Coron drum synth clones were essentially the same. If you scroll down you'll see the DX-5 appears to be an expanded version with some extra controls on the site. The front panel controls are the same. I have no idea if the range of them and/or specs vary.

Cortez D-2 MINI Synth with Box - "Disco's Signature Sound"

"Cortez "MINI-SYNTH"DISCO's 'SignatureSound' Stupid RARE Mint W Box Instruc WOW""

via this auction

These actually come up fairly often under various brand names including the Coron DS8, Asama Drum Sync, Storm Drum Sync, Grant PS-7 Percussion Synth, KMD Drum Exciter, and possibly more. What's really odd is there appears to be a Cortez D-3 with the same controls. See the labels below for other branding.

"Made in "JAPAN" The 'Cortez D-2 "MINI-SYNTH"'1976-7' Was Born The "Puuuu, Puuuuuu" "Sound" that became the signature sound of 1970s 'DISCO' with notable 'Music artists' such as with "Donna Summers" "Last Dance", The Gap Band's 'You Dropped a Bomb On Me', And just about everyone used this "Cortez 'Mini-Synth' What a cool little synth it really is ! ! !

The 'Cortez-"MINI SYNTH" clamps on to your 'Tom Drum or a Cymbal stand/ Snare stand or any stand will doooo You just "HIT THE Surrounding area of the mounted "Cortez" and it triggers the 'Synth' ...''that's how it works'''...! I have used this synth and found it does "Way-More" than Just manually selected "Puuuuu, Puuuu's ...The synth will allow you to 'Create many "Way-Cool" Perc, and Low Frq 'PHAT" Moog-Like "Boom Tricks, and Very 'Metallic resonator sound Frequencies ...An Excessively & Musically-''cool-and-unique'' sounds and EFFECTS" Left only to the imagination ! You can spend hours messing with this Synth...A true Piece Of the "70's" "Thing" 'If ever you could find'.!...As a collectors, or a serious Recording Project to add a "Totally unique effect or 'Dub/Groove' "thing" this is the "MAN" !!!"

RARE VINTAGE JSH DX-5 PRO-RHYTHM MINI SYNTH

YouTube Uploaded by ThePromoHouse on Jul 12, 2011

via this auction

Also known as the Coron DS8, Asama Drum Sync, Storm Drum Sync, Grant PS-7 Percussion Synth, KMD Drum Exciter, Cortez D-2 Mini Synth, BIAS BS-2, and possibly more. See the Coron label below. Anyone know why there were so many branding for this? I think this holds the record.

via the listing: "The Mini Synth, when connected to my headphones, covered a massive range of synthesised sounds and this is an incredibly flexible unit for its mini size and I would, I guess, sound fabulous in the right hands and with the right input and amplification (I haven't got the means to really put it through its paces). Please feel free to ask as many questions as you wish - I am not familiar with synthesisers (I obtained this in a job-lot including vintage microphones and headphones)"

"'The Drum synth experience...a new dimension in sound'

That's what it says on the front of the owners manual (photocopy version you will get with this) and that's what they said when this came out (I believe late 70's early 80's).

It is powered by 2 x 9V battery this one has actually been beautifully modified to accept a mains supply. It comes with an original single braced stand which has seen better days but works perfectly (included in the sale). You can mix this through your electronic drum module, or simply plug into a PA or Hi Fi system. You will love the crazy sounds such as 'Disco', Helicopter', Patrol Car', 'Surf', 'Match of the day' or 'funky toad' or simply create your own....all you need is a guitar type lead and an amp, These are extremely rare, and this one is in extremely good condition."

JSH Pro Rhythm Mini Synth

No title link. Just two shots pulled via this auction.

Anyone know more about these?
Update via RyBread in the comments:
"They're a percussion synth that was marketed for actual drummers. the mounts allowed it to be mounted to a drum stand for live use. The Schemo can be found at [link].

I've been trying to find the time to build one for more than a year now."

JSH Pro Rhythm Drum Synt SD1

Shot pulled from this auction.

Details:

"For more pictures and SOUND SAMPLES go to here.

This drum synth sounds AMAZING - check out the samples at the link above.

The synth section has two oscillators, multi mode resonant filter, LFO, ring modulator, two envelope sections and an amazingly versatile architecture allowing the creation of sounds that most analogue synths could not manage.

Better still the drum pad is VELOCITY sensitive so the sound, filter, pitch, etc can change depending how hard you hit the pad!!

The controls are as follows:

VCO 1 (oscillator) - Frequency, Switch (square wave/noise/ring mod)
VCF (filter) - Frequency, Switch (low pass/band pass/high pass), Resonance
VCO 2 (oscillator) - Frequency, Switch (LFO/OFF/saw), Modulation amount (routable to VCO1 and VCF).
SWEEP (envelope section) - Switch (VCO1/both/VCO2),VCO (amount envelope modulates pitch of selected oscillator - allows positive and negative), VCF (envelope mod of VCF), Decay.
VCA - Decay, Volume.

10 knobs and 4 switches.

The architecture and modulation possibilities make for a very versatile unit that can produce sounds from the usual space drum to Kraftwerk snares, Kicks, hats and metal sounds (thanks to ring mod). Also the bass sounds are amazing and really unusual - great for sampling to allow accurate pitch control - or "play" the Frequency knob."
