GEMINI 2412 User Guide Part 3: Using the dual filters together - stereo, formant, 24dB cascaded etc

video upload by AJH Synth Official

AJH Synth Official GEMINI 2412 User Guide posts

"Part 3 of 3. The AJH Synth Gemini 2412 Dual Multi-mode SEM-based VCF explained. The 3-part User Guide will cover this very complex and fully-featured, yet simple to use analogue filter. This final part shows how the functions explained in parts 1 and 2 can be used with both filters working together, with particular attention to creating a 24dB low pass filter, and a 12dB band pass filter, using the Gemini as a single filter in cascade mode. Also, creating formant, or vocal type sounds, evolving patches using an envelope to morph between the output of both filters, then finishing off with various no-talking patch examples, such as using the Gemini as a stereo filter, as part of a 2-voice polyphonic synth, and constantly changing sequencer patterns."

MiniMod 6U Full System minimal 2-Voice performance - Melodic Eurorack Modular - AJH Synth

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Another 2-Voice melodic performance using the MiniMod 6U Full System, now available to purchase from https://ajhsynth.com/Minimod.html, pre-installed in a powered case. This time a version of a very minimal track I previously released here (track 6): https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com/...
This is a bit more simplistic than the previous video, but another example of what is possible using just single, modest-sized case, packed with an incredibly flexible, vintage-voiced, fully analogue, Eurorack modular synthesizer. Here the synth is configured as two operate voices - a 2 VCO drone synth generating 2-note chords, and a single VCO lead synth with external delay. It uses all the modules from the Minimoog-based part of the system, along with the Gemini 2412 SEM-based dual VCF, DH-ADSR envelope generator, and the indispensable Ring SM as a CP-3 mixer and sub-octave/sub-bass generator. Also used is the Erica Synths Black Sequencer.

New TAP TEMPO VC-LFO 16-Wave Eurorack Module by AJH Synth

NEW! TAP TEMPO VC-LFO 16-wave voltage-controlled modulation Eurorack module with VCA, Int/Ext clock
video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The TAP TEMPO VC-LFO is a skiff-friendly, 42hp Eurorack low frequency oscillator. It's a modulation powerhouse, with 16 waveforms, 15 with 'wave form twist' PWM-like control, random sample & hold type waves, and CV control over all functions. It can serve as a clock source, or can be clocked by external pulse/gate signals, with a clock multiply/divide function, along with a built-in VCA controlling both bipolar (LFO type) and unipolar (envelope-type) outputs. It's great for everything from simple expression-controlled pitch vibrato, to clocking or being clocked by sequencers for time-synced modulation, and generative patches, where randomness and/or time control is needed to be shared between different modules.

This video is a brief introduction to the module, but following 1 hour after this upload will be a full USER GUIDE VIDEO detailing all functions, along with some example patches.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for more module USER GUIDE videos, and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides detailing a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, and each containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Every modular system needs modulation sources to add variety and interest to static sounds. The more powerful and versatile the modulator, then the more interesting these sounds can become. We compiled a wish list of useful features, starting with obvious ones such as CV control of Frequency, Tap Tempo, Unipolar and Bipolar outputs and a wide range of waveforms, and then we just kept adding more features such as waveform twist, rate multiplication, Sync In/Out and an inbuilt dual VCA for modulation level control. Then we made sure that we had voltage control (and therefore automation) available for every single feature. This takes it way beyond the realms of regular LFO's and make the Tap Tempo VC-LFO a modulation powerhouse.

Ergonomics are important too, it can really spoil the workflow if we have to stop and refer to the user manual to find out what some obscure control or jack socket does - so it follows our usual format of having a very clear, intuitive and uncluttered front panel. All of the jack sockets are in two rows at the bottom, with the inputs on the left and outputs on the right hand side.

The Tap Tempo VC-LFO is available with either a Black or Silver front panel.

'FAT BASS' - Bigger Sound for Synth Bass Lines using the Wave Swarm & Ring SM Eurorack modules

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Some fat synth bass line sounds using a variation of 2 VCO, Ladder Filter, Wave Swarm for a thick sawtooth pad, and Ring SM for sub basses. Either or both of these 2 modules add a lot of scope to the sound of even a single VCO, even more so with two. Patch notes at the bottom.
The Wave Swarm uses it's 12 waveform animators to create thick, buzzing supersaw style sounds, from either a single saw wave, or from two independent saws, even as part of two completely separate monophonic synth voices, even a two-voice polyphonic patch. Check the links below for User Guide and some patches.
The Ring SM has both a vintage-voiced, fully analogue ring modulator, modelled on the ring mod from the EMS Synthi and VCS3, but it is also a 5-channel Moog CP3 style mixer, capable of soft clipping overdrive/distortion, and most importantly for bass patches - a sub bass/sub-octave generator, needing only a single VCO to generate both -1 and -2 sub octaves simultaneously. All functions can be used together, or on their own. The sub basses are shaped sine waves, which sound thicker and deeper than plain square waves, which are most commonly used by synths as sub basses.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

AJH Synth NEW! MULTI BURST ENVELOPES

NEW! MULTI BURST ENVELOPES - An 8-shape envelope generator, with multiple time-controlled repeats video upload by AJH Synth Official

"An introduction and brief overview of the new MULTI BURST ENVELOPES from AJH Synth." Video by DreamsOfWires

The MiniMod Multi Burst Envelopes module generates variable length bursts of repeating envelopes that can change over time, with CV control of all functions.

The BURSTS control selects a 'Burst Sequence' of between 1 and 40 bursts. The envelope shape of a burst is chosen with the rotary switch, or it can be varied using an external CV, so that it is even possible to chose a different envelope shape for each individual burst in a sequence.

The width of the envelope (i.e. the attack and decay time) is varied with the P-WIDTH control and this can also be CV controlled as a sequence is progressing, so it is possible to vary the envelope speed of each individual envelope burst while a Burst Sequence is running.

The repeat time of individual bursts in a Burst Sequence is set with the LFO Rate control. The LFO rate can be varied with an external CV as a sequence is progressing, so the gap between envelopes can speed up or slow down over time. An external clock can also time the bursts in a burst sequence instead of, or in addition to the internal LFO. Bursts can also be manually incremented with the CLK push button.

The SLOPE control allows Bursts to start quietly and build in level to maximum, or they can start at full level and then reduce in level as the Burst Sequence progresses. In the centre position all Bursts are of equal level.

Full USER GUIDE video available 30 minutes after this video goes live.

'Old School Jam' All-modular, Step Sequencer, Bucket Brigade Delay, Eurorack FX, and no quantiser!

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Un-quantised, old-school sequencer fun: Inspired by early sequenced electronica such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, much of whose music used a Moog 960 sequencer, which didn't have quantising features, and were sometimes difficult to tune accurately or reliably. Such as the track 'Phaedra' by Tangerine Dream, during which the Moog performing the opening pattern had to be re-tuned during the actual recording, and it was left on the album! Yet it sounds great, it's imperfect tuning adds so much to the atmosphere of the music, irrespective if it was deliberate or a 'happy accident'.

Here I use an un-quantised sequencer, in fact an Erica Synths Sequential Switch, with it's CV expander that turns it into a great little 8-step sequencer. I also run it through the AJH Synth CV Mix, to offset the CV going to the oscillator, allowing me to push the output into the negative CV range. I then send this shifted signal to the VCO's frequency modulation input instead of the 1V/Oct... just to make it more difficult to tune! Seriously though, this was a fun experiment, and taking off the digital stabilisers (or quantisers) once in a while is highly recommended, and a good learning experience. This was an all-modular session - no external FX or mixing, just Eurorack modules for all functions.

MiniMod & Ribbon Controller - AJH Synth Eurorack Ambient with Gemini 2412 'SEM' style Dual Filter

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A 2-voice ambient performance using the Doepfer ribbon controller with the AJH Synth MiniMod eurorack modular system, here incorporating the Gemini 2412 'SEM-based' dual multimode filter/VCF. Simple 2 note/2 VCO chords are shifted in pitch with the Ribbon, and pressure sensitivity used to control the Gemini's overall frequency, and the level of pitch vibrato from the Dual LFO module, which has a built-in VCA. A third VCO via the Transistor Ladder Filter creates a single oscillator drone sound (a square wave with pulse width modulation/PWM), whilst the Dual LFO also modulates the frequency of this VCF, and both VCF's on the Gemini in position to each other. The Gemini is used as a stereo filter, with both going of it's VCF's going to separate VCA's and audio channels to creates a stereo panning effect.
The Gemini can be used as 2 filters in series, or in stereo with a single audio input signal, but here both filters are processing a different VCO via their individual inputs, whilst the global Dual Frequency CV function of the module's central mix bus section allows them both to be controlled in unison, in addition to, or instead of their own individual CV control. This offers a huge amount of flexibility.
A suitably large reverb is added in post to add a film/movie soundtrack quality to the sound.

Reach the LOWEST Notes with your Controller - PRECISION VOLTAGES to Transpose CV Signals

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Ever been frustrated that your CV controller keyboard, sequencer or MIDI to CV converter doesn't reach the lowest notes that your VCO or other oscillators can produce? The PRECISION VOLTAGES module by AJH SYNTH can fix this problem. Using it to shift the CV output of your device up or down by up to 10 octaves (and 12 semitones) means that you can reach a huge range of the pitches that your synth can produce, even into the LFO range. Many controllers won't output negative CV signals, meaning they'll only go so low and then stop producing more notes, so you may find yourself pressing the lowest keys but still only getting the same pitch. This isn't a fault with the controller, but a considered compromise, depending on the design and intended functionality of the device. However, when paired with the Precision Voltages this is no longer an issue.

In the future a full 'User Guide' video for the Precision Voltages will demonstrate the many uses and functions this extremely flexible module can provide.

This video also relates to the earlier video demonstrating how to use the GLIDE + NOISE MkII module to access and use the CV BUS for controlling multiple VCOs from a single patch cable: [below]

How To Use the CV BUS - with the GLIDE + NOISE MkII Module or Mini Mod Eurorack Modular System

"This video shows you how you can use the CV BUS with a CV Controller (in this case an Arturia Keystep) via the Glide + Noise module (MkII version only) to control the pitch of multiple VCOs, and send the signal on to a filter or any other destination, thus making patching simpler, faster and tidier. There is also a section detailing the basics of what you'll need to know about bus boards to ensure that you can use both the CV BUS and GATE BUS, however a detailed video regarding using both will be coming soon.

Also, it briefly mentions how the PRECISION VOLTAGES module can compliment this system, and help you to expand the CV range of your controller, in case you are having trouble reaching the lowest notes your synth can produce. The AJH SYNTH MINI MOD system is based on the original Moog Minimoog Model D, but greatly expanded into Eurorack Modular format. Its high-end design and manufacture provides authentic vintage tones, with modern usage sensibilities, featuring substantial controls and socket layouts to provide a modular synth that is a true instrument to be played.

The GLIDE + NOISE MkII module can be used with any Eurorack modular system where access to the CV BUS is needed, along with a classic Glide function, and 3 simultaneously available noise outputs - white, pink, and red. Note that the original Glide + Noise MkI version of the module, since discontinued, does not have this facility.

Patch of The Week: 'Filter Drums' Part 1 - Analogue Cowbell w/ Fixed Filter Bank 914 (& VCF Clave)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This week's patch is the first of a short series showing ways to use filters for vintage rhythm/drum machine percussion style sounds, beginning with an analogue cowbell-type sound using the Fixed Filter Bank 914.

00:00 Patch of The Week: 'Filter Drums'
02:07 Patch Sheet

Some filters can be used to create tones without any input sound, simply by pushing them into self-oscillation (raising resonance beyond it's threshold point), but the Fixed Filter Bank is not a regular filter/VCF, so it works a little differently. Rather than controlling the overall frequency of the filter, each of it's bandpass filters has a preset frequency, for which you control the level. On the AJH Synth module they are deliberately tuned to one of two pitches when pushed into feedback, which makes it more musically useful. Here, I mix in some white noise to add texture to the feedback frequencies.

For comparison, I also included the Ladder Filter here to demonstate how a typical VCF (which can self-oscillate) can be controlled by a sequencer, with the steps controlling the pitches it produces. The point is that either module has it's advantages when used to synthesize particular sounds. In this video the ladder filter is producing simple tuned claves."

Patch of The Week: No-Input Filter Drums Part 2 - Using VCF Self-Oscillation to create Percussion

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This week's patch shows some ideas for using self-oscillating analogue filters to produce vintage drum machine inspired sounds, the basis of which can be used to emulate such sounds as the clave, bongo, cowbell, and kick/bass drum of early rhythm boxes. I used the sounds of the Roland CR-78, TR-77 and Acetone FR-2L as inspiration here, but in a later Patch of The Week video I'll be recreating some sounds of 70's machines more directly, using VCOs and noise sources. In the meantime, the methods contained here might be of interest to those wanting to make some simple percussive accompaniment with a limited number of modules. At the end of the video I'll show some vintage-inspired patterns using the modular as a 4 voice drum machine, without needing to use samples or a sampler. Patch of The Week: Brass & Blade - inspired by Vangelis & Jarre, a melodic jam with 2 patches

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"First of 3 videos with the Gemini 2412, starting with this simple performance using 2 sounds derived from a monophonic synth brass patch, loosely inspired by Vangelis (Blade Runner) and Jean-Michel Jarre (specifically Oxygene). The next 2 videos will show you how to make the sounds.
The patch emulates the Oberheim SEM design (2 VCO, 1 VCF, 2 ADS envelopes), as the Gemini 2412 is based on the filter from that classic gorgeous-sounding synth module. As many will know, Vangelis famously used the CS-80, and Jarre a variety of expensive early synths, but the humble SEM wasn't necessarily associated with either of them. However, it's character of sound, and that of the Gemini, make it a particularly good choice for brass-like pads and leads, either using it's bandpass filter (as in this video), or it's high pass and low pass filters (much like the CS-80).
In the next video I'll show how to construct the brass sound from the later half of this video, and in the video following that will show how to make a couple of sounds directly based on the CS-80 patches used in Blade Runner, so stay tuned.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for more 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides detailing a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, and each containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Melodic Randomness: Chance Delay & Dual RVG (Eurorack Probability & Random CV for Generative Patches)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Visit AJH Synth @MachinaBristronica (UK) Saturday 30th. Experimentation with using 2 random event & voltage generator modules within a melodic, sequencer-controlled, modular synth performance. Randomness/probability/chance can form the backbone of a generative music patch, but also in more manually controlled situations, and are a great companion for step sequencers.

Here a purely analogue step sequencer is used, with the time variation function of the Dual RVG serving as the master clock, and the Chance Delay adding probability to each step occurring. In the previous video the Chance Delay was randomly passing the gate signals from a sequencer to the synth voice it was controlling, so some steps would be missing. This time the module is placed before the sequencer, so that all steps will occur, in the correct order, but randomly. Since the gates it is receiving is from the master clock, all of the sequencer steps will remain in time with the music.

The Dual RVG also simultaneously produces 2 random control voltages for each clock pulse, and so I'm using one of these to modulate the frequency of the Entropic Doom, which I'm using to generate a simple percussive sound. The new Triple Cross module is also featured here, and cross-fades between 4 pitched drones, forming a melodic chord, but with 2 separate LFOs controlling the cross-fading, so that the mix between the 4 notes/sounds is constantly changing.

2 of the VCOs from the drone sound are passing through the Wave Swarm, creating a buzz of additional sawtooths to thicken their sound. These 2 are heard through the Fixed Filter Bank 914 later on, which creates a more choir-like timbre to accompany the output of the Triple Cross. The Sonic XV is used as both a filter and a wave-folder for much of the melodic sequence, where it is at times accompanied or replaced by the same VCO passing through the Ring SM and then Transistor Ladder Filter into Low Fat VCF.

Come see and hear the modules this weekend at: https://machinabris.wpengine.com

Expanding the Mother 32 Part 2 - More VCO's & Chords, Vocal sounds, External Filter/VCF (Eurorack)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The last of 2 videos showing some ways to add more flexibility and sonic power to the Moog Mother 32 using AJH SYNTH modules. The synth is semi-modular and designed with Eurorack compatibility in mind, so this unlocks the huge range of modules in the Eurorack modular ecosystem. Since the Mother 32 has that trademark Moog sound, the AJH Synth MiniMod range sit particularly well with it's vintage analogue synth lineage. The individual elements of the standard MiniMod voice are in fact based directly on the original R.A.Moog version of the Minimoog.

This video shows another example of adding multiple external VCO's to create a big, dense tone with multiple octaves, and also with 2 of the oscillators offset at different pitch intervals to create chords, just as was possible on the original Minimoog synthesizer.

Also shown is an example of using an external filter, in this case the powerful GEMINI 2412 dual multi-mode VCF, which is simply a case of running internal and/or external oscillators and sound sources into the filter, then back into the Ext Audio input, setting the Mother 32's internal ladder filter to maximum frequency (fully open), and reducing resonance to zero. Of course there's no reason why this filter cannot also be used as part of a patch, although the Gemini's two filters can also be run into each other internally (Cascade = in series) in the same way. Finally an example of vocal timbres/formant sounds, which can be achieved by many methods, but here using the wave folder featured on the SONIC XV diode ladder filter, and the FIXED FILTER BANK 914, which really is a go-to tool for tone shaping, allowing the output of 14 individual filters (1 low pass, 12 band pass, 1 high pass), each fixed at a specific frequency, to be mixed together at individual levels in order to dial in a desired tone.

Expanding the MiniMod Part 1 - Adding a 2nd Voice in just 2 or 3 modules (AJH Synth Eurorack tips)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"If you have an AJH Synth MiniMod Eurorack system you might be wondering which modules to add next. We often get asked for advice about this, and of course It depends on what you wish to achieve musically, but we'll be uploading some video suggestions, starting by adding a second voice with just 2 or 3 modules.
Creating a second voice means having a second monosynth, so that your modular synth can then function as two substantial, separate analogue synths in one case. As the MiniMod comprises 3 VCO's as standard, adding an addition filter and VCA already makes this possible, but then adding the RING SM provides the potential for two, very big-sounding classic synthesiser sounds in one place, with one power supply, and minimal space. At the same time, as you're adding different modules to those you already have, it also hugely expands your sonic possibilities when using the system as a single synth, with vintage ring modulator, wave folder (Sonic XV), also Minimoog-style overdrive and switching mixer to mute or enable signals."

MiniMod Keyz: 1 Synth, 1 Pattern, 10 Minutes - Berlin School-inspired one-synth improvisation

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This was an early run with our MiniMod Keyz prototype test machine, using just the onboard arpeggiator, voiced by 3 VCOs, Ring SM, Transistor Ladder Filter and more. This system is superb at recreating the sounds and vibes of those early electronica records of the 1970's, providing the sound of the Minimoog and the flexibility of the Moog modular systems that dominated them. As the author of this video I could quite honestly sit for over an hour making sounds such as this on just one sequencer pattern or arpeggio, it just sounds that good. Of course, the system isn't trapped in the music of the past, it's a fully-modular Eurorack system after all, but when it comes to the vintage electronic sounds and tones that brought this musician to the world of analogue synths in the first place, the MiniMod sure does deliver the goods.

The MiniMod Keyz system is available to purchase now. Check out the website for pricing, dealers, and other products: https://ajhsynth.com/Products.html

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

'Für Klaus' - Tribute to Klaus Schulze, a Eurorack Modular Performance #eurorack #synth #ajhsynth

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"On this channel Sunday 8th @7pm GMT - a 13-minute track recorded as a single-take performance, and a purpose-made tribute/dedication to the late Klaus Schulze. The piece is inspired by his music directly, creating some sounds akin to those he used in the late 1970's, even including one of his sequences. Much of it was composed and rehearsed, whilst some of it was improvised, but I suspect much less so than Schulze's works, which were often much longer, involving more improvisation and more instruments. This piece consists of just three voices across 4 audio tracks/channels, altered or converted in real-time during the performance to achieve different sounds.

As a creator of electronic music, Schulze was one of the most significant influences for me (the video creator). His music, his attitude towards it in the interviews I read of his, and the way he worked alone to create dense, fascinating, complete musical performances and soundscapes, at a time when the technology was in it's infancy, and before later technologies such as complex computer sequencing, sound creation, processing and mixing were available. As a solitary musician, his was a great, empowering example. His bravery to improvise, experiment, and co-exist with imperfections, embracing them rather than fearing them, makes me warm to the artist and the music even more. Schulze used, among others, an early Minimoog (leads) and a large Moog modular system, which he customised with additional modules over the following years. Since the core AJH MiniMod system is directly based on the early, more desirable R.A.Moog version of the Minimoog, yet is entirely modular, it makes a great choice for this homage to one of electronic music's greatest pioneers.

The RadioPhonic - Sounds inspired by vintage Sci-fi soundtracks (see description for more info)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The RadioPhonic - A short performance of some sounds inspired by the early work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, specifically the TV series Doctor Who (a particular nod here to the story 'The Sea Devils'), and other Sci-fi/horror TV or movies from the 1960's to early 1980's.

This is the third of a few example videos featuring The RadioPhonic - a synth commissioned by Hans Zimmer, recreations of which are now available to pre-order at https://ajhsynth.com/Radiophonic.html. The RadioPhonic features 48 AJH Synth modules, including 8 envelopes, 7 VCOs, 6 LFOs, 6 VCFs, up to 7 VCAs, random voltage generators, random gates, phaser, fixed filter bank, dedicated noise oscillator, wave-folder, wave multipliers, audio and CV mixers, ring modulators, sub-octave generator, glide/slew, octave/semitone switching, multiples... and in a beautiful hardwood, well-powered Eurorack case.

Patch notes:
The ring modulator sound at the beginning uses the Ring SM's 3-way ring mod, where inputs Y and Z are both modulators. A triangle from a VCO is used, along with two sine waves created with the Gemini 2412, by setting both filters to self-oscillate. The frequency/pitch of these are then controlled by random voltages created with the Dual RVG. The Dual RVG also generates random gates simultaneously, which are used to trigger the VCA. This means all events it generates are in time with each other.

The RadioPhonic - Drone Part 2: 'Rhythmic' (4-Analogue Voices, Self-Patched, Melodic)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Another in a series of example videos featuring The RadioPhonic - a synth commissioned by Hans Zimmer, recreations of which are now available to pre-order at https://ajhsynth.com/Radiophonic.html.

This is Part 2 to the earlier Cinematic Drone video. It is based on the same patch, but modified to add a rhythmic element, using the Chance Delay module for some random behaviour / probability. It is also completely self-patch (in the box), no sequencer or controllers are used.

The RadioPhonic features 48 AJH Synth modules, including 8 envelopes, 7 VCOs, 6 LFOs, 6 VCFs, up to 7 VCAs, random voltage generators, random gates, phaser, fixed filter bank, dedicated noise oscillator, wave-folder, wave multipliers, audio and CV mixers, ring modulators, sub-octave generator, glide/slew, octave/semitone switching, multiples... and in a beautiful hardwood, well-powered Eurorack case.
