Electrocomp EML-101 Electronic Music Laboratories

"For your consideration is an EML 101 in decent cosmetic condition, and fully functional. As you can see from the pictures, there is some yellowing on the keys, some tarnish on the exterior latches, and the original naugahyde handle is gone. If you're actually looking to play this synth, then you might be more interested to know that it has been recently serviced, and is in excellent working condition, and sounds amazing. The EML 101 is an amazing flexible synthesizer with a completely unique tone. You're not going to be able to mimic this synth with your minibrute, mother, or whatever came out last month..."

"Rare and professionally maintained Electrocomp Synthesizer Patch Cable Electric Piano Model 101. This particular EML101 was owned by a famous jazz musician/ music theorist/ author and used on tour to some degree. It was professionally serviced throughout the time of his ownership before he died. It was likely used on several famous jazz LPs, as well.

The EML 101 is a duophonic semi-modular synthesizer with 4 (!) VCOs and a continuously variable multimode filter (lowpass – bandpass – highpass). It has normalled connections which can be modified by patch leads, similar to an ARP-2600. The instrument’s sounds is superb, it has a wonderful character of its own.

According to Peter Forrest, this instrument was EML’s most successful product – about 1000 'Model 101' were made … THIS IS MARKED 212, WHICH IS EARLY IN PRODUCTION."

ElectroComp EML-200 VINTAGE ANALOG MODULAR

via this auction

"THIS SYNTHESIZER STARTED A REVOLUTION!" (see the ad below)

"This is a very rare and unusual modular sound synthesizer. Only about a few hundred of the EML-200's were made, and this one has the sought after blue face. The EML-200 modular synthesizer is a vintage synth fanatics dream come true. Its capable of sounding like nothing else you have ever heard. It's a cross between a musical patchable synth like a Moog or ARP 2600 and RAW test equipment - great for someone who needs really science fiction sound effects, drones or crazy tones - oscillator sweeps, pings, bleeps, huge reverberating swells, clangy metallic sounds, fat drum sounds, percussion, harsh noises, you name it! The tone of the EML-200 is very different from that of any other manufacturer. It can be raw, nasty and harsh but also pure, floaty and lush. Nothing sounds spacier than this things spring reverb! Great for the experimental musician or sound designer / noisician. It's a great stand alone unit but also makes a terrific companion to the EML-101, EML-300 sequencer, and other ElectroComp products, or cross patch it with your other analog gear for variety! You can also control the EML-200 with a variety other external analog sequencers. I believe you can also have an experienced technician install a midi to cv converter so you can hook up an external midi type keyboards and sequencers if you like. It's also a really unique processing tool for other sound sources such as a microphones, guitars, keyboards, etc. There's a mic preamp so you can patch external sounds through the electro comp's high pass and low pass filters, TWO ring modulators, 3 oscillators, etc to create all kinds of stereo effects, vocoder or whatever else you can dream up.

"Originally designed to be used an educational tool in schools for the beginning electronic composer. They wanted a synthesizer that could stand up to young exploring hands and 10 hours a day use, so needless to say it's very durable and sturdy. You can't make a wrong patch, anything is possible!

Manufactured by Electronic Music Laboratories in Vernon, CT, USA."

EML 101 Electrocomp vintage analog semi-modular synth

via this auction

"The EML 101 hails from the beginning of portable synthesizers. EML started out as a small US competitor to Moog and Arp in the early 70's. The 101 is a FOUR oscillator duophonic semi-modular synth. The sound is perhaps most comparable to early Oberheim, but the overall design encourages experimentation (the limits of which were pushed, most notably, by Allen Ravenstein of Pere Ubu).

This 101 is in very good cosmetic condition. It works perfectly and looks good despite missing two case latches (that fix the synth to the keyboard when open) and having a broken leather handle (it will be 40 years old next year). This 101 has been fully tuned and calibrated by Switched On Music Electronics. It works and sounds incredible."

EML ELECTROCOMP 101

via this auction

"very rare 1970's vintage analog synthesizer: The EML Electrocomp Model 101. This machine was a runner up in the early synthesizer market competing with the MiniMoog and the ARP 2600. All are great synths, but each has it's own merits.
The EML 101 is an amazing sounding Analog monster. It is semi-modular with hard wired internal routing, which can be re-routed through the patch bay at the top.
It has 4 oscillators, Oscillator 1 being an LFO and Oscillator 4 can be switched between an LFO or changed up into the audio range. Oscillators 2 and 3 are in the audio range and with the right setting can be played as a duo-phonic voice on the 44-note keyboard. In addition Oscillator 2 and 3 are can crossfade through different wave forms giving it a unique sound when tweaking the knobs.
If you ever wanted one of these, this is the best time. No import duties and way less for shipping.
A hand full of EML 101 synths have been showing up on EBAY U.S. But with import and shipping they are turn out to be very expensive.

In addition it has:
12dB/oct VCF
VCA/ Ring Modulator
2 ADS Envelopes
Sample and hold with its own clock
Mic preamp
Keyboard Control section (allowing multiple equally tempered scales between 12-60 key per octave)"

Eml electrocomp 101 and 200 Song

"A song I wrote today on my EML 101 and 200"

via this auction

"(EML 200 pictured is not included!)

Selling off my EML 101 (Electronic Music Labs). This thing is extremely unique, I also have a minimoog and several other vintage synths and none of them come close to covering the eml tone! It is an amazingly vintage sounding synth (don't know how else to describe it!) I also have a 200 and they are great in combination (might be willing to part with both if you want to make me a good offer on them. This thing has 4 oscillators, a multimode filter, 2 envelopes, an amp modulator/ringmodulator and several other things, not to mention it is patchable!

The thing has a few nicks here and there but nothing major. It comes with the original manual and soundcharts/patch charts and even has the factory mod of the mod wheel which can be patched into any parameter for more control! The thing is super flexible and amazing!! Folds up into a compact carrying case with its handle still intact."

"This EML-101 works 100% and sounds fantastic. Incredible raw tone and bass on this--one oscillator alone sounds huge. It was also fully restored a few years ago by a very experienced EML tech. Work including cleaning of all jacks and pots as well as complete recapping. You are buying a totally ready to go machine!

In addition, the tech added the following modifications:

1) a 1V/Oct input--gets around the odd scaling these normally have.

2) a sample and hold input--allows you to feed any signal into the S/H, not just oscillator 4 as on stock model.

3) a separate external trigger input for envelope 2 (normally external triggers work on both envelopes simultaneously).

The latter two mods have been put into two of the multiple jacks on the right side of the panel. This is means that you will not be able to use those jacks as a multiple. However, realistically this is not much of a setback as there is still another multiple available and patching rarely requires more than one multiple.

Physical condition is great, with very few surficial cosmetic flaws (mainly light scrapes/paint smudges). One key needs a new bushing, but currently plays fine as-is."

Electronic Music Laboratories Modular Restoration Project

via George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular: "This is my Electronic Music Laboratories sequencer. It is actually a compilation of assorted EML synthesizers I own that I stuffed into a common case.

In 1978, I was tired of trying to stack all of these and decided to compile them into one unit. At the time, I owned: The Electrocomp 400 sequencer with the 2x16 sequencer panel, The EML 200 "Modular" And, the EML 300 controller. I also own an EML 101 and an EML Poly-Box but, they didn't stack. I built the case out of 1/2" plywood with wood mounting rails and stapled black vinyl around the case. The case measures 4' wide x 3.5' high x 1' deep. Since I had a couple of extra holes, I ordered another 2x16 sequencer panel and another EML 300 without a case to fill it up. After 32 years, I've decided to refurbish this compilation and give it a new house.

The plan: Besides the panels in the case, I also have the EML circuit modules that I had purchased from EML in order to build a 'proof of concept' Syntar in 1979 [Update: see this post]. I also have a few left over 3-octave Pratt-Read keyboards from my old Syntar stock along with some old Syntar circuit boards. I want to determine what I have that is still working or, easy to fix. Once I have an inventory, I'm going to design a modular panel to fit between the 300's and the top portion and incorporate the working modules into the system. I'm also going to add the two 3-octave keyboards. Below those, I will put my 88-key M-audio MIDI controller keyboard and add a couple of MMM MIDI/CV controllers. Anything that I feel I need to fill out the signal paths and patching structure I'll just pull from my DIY module stock.

After the "modular" section is defined, I'll refurbish, re-cap the existing EML panels, calibrate them and clean/lube all of the panel controls that aren't sealed. Any sealed pots that are noticeably bad in an audio path will be replaced with something newer.

It should be a fun refurbishing project.

To be continued…."

George Mattson"

EML ElectroComp 101

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

According to the listing, this one's been updated for 1volt per octave to support integration with most modern modular systems.

"EML 101 which was serviced 3 months ago by Ed Miller of Synthesizer Repair here in Los Angeles. The synth works and sounds incredible. It's one of the sickest and nastiest sounding analogs ever made. It does not disappoint anyone who uses it. I just gave the 101 a full test drive and it is 100% fully functional. The item is used and is being sold as is. There is some cosmetic wear and tear on the case as you can see, since it's over 30 years old. I've keep the synth in pristine condition, and pampered it as much as possible. I've owned the unit for over 10 years now and when I purchased it, some of the plastic knobs are not original. This didn't bother me, but I wanted to mention it. The 101 has been set to a 1volt per octave standard, instead of the original 1.2 volts per octave. This allows you to use it with other analog gear / CV converters. . Also, there is an common internal modification on the 101. That the gate input triggers both envelope generators, not just #1. This allows for greater flexibility when sequencing.."

Electrocomp EML-101

via this auction

"EML 101 is a 4 osc monosynth. Its semi modular so you can make sounds without patch cords if you like. There is a multimode sweepable 12db filter 2 envelopes , a ring modulator that can be mixed in with a knob, a great sample and hold which can sample a number of sources, an external input for processing sounds as well as a noise generator. One unique feature is the keys/oct knob which allows you to play different types of scales. The keyboard is very easy to use, the modulation amount knobs go in either direction to either the lfo or the sample and hold. Each osc has octave switches and fine tuning like a minimoog. The synth sounds like it looks, basically a cross between a moog/arp and electronic test equipment... It really has its own thing going on. It can do some moogy leads but its not really its forte. Fans of early electronica like raymond scott will love it; its very electric and a bit raw. Four oscillator sounds are ridiculously thick, and the filter is a joy to use sounds very SEM ish. You can get great percussive patterns with the sample and hold and filter resonance. The ring mod is quite evil, can do 'machine' noises and sound effects very well. All in all a unique keyboard that folds up into a small box."

"When you're looking, you'll probably know: this is one great vintage synthesizer.

Its sound can go anywhere, from deep bass to the weirdest fx - and anything in between.

4 (!) oscillators (2 of which can serve as LFO), nice multimode filter, many patchpoints, pre-amp, mono or duophonic playing, 2 envelopes - modulation on this synth is great. And the sound is so very outstandingly vintage!

No wonder it's been a Pere Ubu (check them out!) favourite for many years. Keyboardists came and went, but the EML101 stayed ;-)

This particular EML 101 is in perfect working conditions, all functions work as they should - the vco tracking is amazing (though it requires adjustment when switching from monophonic to duophonic playing) but you'll find out, this synthesizer has so much up its sleeve, definitely not an ordinary synth. Very rare and collectible, particularly in this condition..."

"meticulously refurbished - fully disassembled, cleaned inside and out, fully serviced and future-proofed so it will hopefully last another 40 or so years. This unit came to us in great shape, so this work took less time than usual for this sort of special treatment - only 23 hours of valuable, skilled labor. Work done includes: keyboard fully rebuilt with new bushings, bus bar and contacts cleaned, keys removed and cleaned. replaced some caps and regulators. jacks cleaned, replaced washers and nuts, cleaned up panel, opened, cleaned and lubed pots, cleaned and lubed switches, power supply rebuilt, unit recalibrated. sn122x. Note: the left set of multiple jacks was previously wired to output the keyboard voltage and is labelled to reflect this. This unit was also tested over a long period of time to ensure reliability. As a result, it's better than others on the market, is working perfectly and is ready to play, no surprises and no excuses. You won't find a better EML-101 anywhere."

EML-200

Click here for shots pulled via this auction

Details:
"A very old-school semi-modular synthesizer expander module designed as an expander to complement the EML 100 and EML 101. It's monophonic with dual oscillators for a fatter tone. Truly an old school instrument which is as old as 1969! It's not too pretty (they can be found in either blue or silver) but nicely designed and laid out. There are 31 knobs and over 60 patch points! With a little patching, even people new to analog synths will be able to start getting sounds out of the 200. Some additional features include two ring modulators and a spring reverb.

Note however that the EML 200 was designed as an Expander module to interface directly with other EML synthesizers. Today, you can use it with analog synths other than EML with the properly modified CV/Gate connections and converters (its oscillators are a non-standard 1.20v/oct). More valuable today as a collectors item rather than a piece of studio kit.

The Electrocomp 200 is a 2-VCO monophonic synthesizer expander module. It did not come with a keyboard but as an expansion module for the 100 or the 101, which included a keyboard. The Electrocomp 200 features two VCOs, which have outputs for sine, triangle, and pulse waveforms, and a noise source. There is a spring reverb, a low-pass VCF, a high-pass VCF, an ADS envelope generator, a ring modulator, a mic preamp, and a dual 3-channel stereo mixer.

The eml-200 came in 2 colors, blue and silver. The later ones were silver and the original ones were blue. The blue 200s were also built into larger cases and were a bit heavier than the more recent silver ones."

Electrocomp EML 400

via this auction

"EML 400 Sequential synthesizer. Serial # 594.

This unit has two banks of 16 stages, and can be configured to trigger 32 stages sequentially. All stages trigger. The clock has been tested to trigger at a continuous range of speed. The oscillator sounds "fat and juicy". The filters (2) have been tested to modulate the signal."

Update via Dave Cornutt in the comments: "The 400 sequencer is actually the leftmost box on top. It was a neat design with a quantizing feature that could be tuned for equal tempered or alternate scales. And by patching the gate signals, it was possible to make it do quasi-random permutating sequences.

The box on the right was the 401 synth. It was a two-oscillator synth with the EML two-pole multimode filter. The synth they are both sitting on top of is the EML 101 semi-modular."
