MATTHS is presenting a series of new releases for 2021 which will see him release one new track every month, see’s him working by recording a single take using a bespoke modular synthesiser setup, MATTHS brings you into his new direction of heavy experimental techno.

MATTHS (Matt Hodson) says: 'this project is the result of designing a new bespoke instrument that had to be tactile, it had to feel like an instrument, and it had to provide a rich pallet sonic exploration. Each track will be a complete take, no edits, complete with its imperfections and human fingerprint where my hands have turned every dial, released every noted and sculpted every tone. This approach to releasing music is different to that of releasing a normal album and I hope that the monthly musical output will take you somewhere different each time, having its own fingerprint but still be recognisable as a MATTHS production. You may know what to expect, but you will never get the same.'

"Acclaimed electronic producer #MatthewHodson presents his exciting new project, #MATTHS.

With his debut performance at the #Superbooth Festival 2019, the Brighton-based artist presented two stunning performances, providing a solo heavy dark modular Techno set at the C-Base party and this special performance which enlists drummer Scott Rowe to provide a dynamically charged and captivating performance.

MATTHS new releases ‘Velocet’ and ‘Loop’ which both immediately provide the listener with their masterful, brooding beats, uses a bespoke modular synthesiser setup, that MATTHS has designed and compiled, enabling the creation of textures and tones specific to personal creative concepts.

Recent MATTHS performances include opening for Wire; supporting Alex Banks (Monkeytown Records), Ulrich Schnauss and Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes). MATTHS has worked with the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop on their new material at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios.

"MATTHS present his second release of 2021 with 'Permanence', an extreme and unapologetic techno production that boasts brutality within the breadth of the production aesthetic. Recorded as a single take using a bespoke modular synthesiser setup, MATTHS brings you into his new direction of heavy experimental techno.

The violence of ‘Permanence’ should not be underestimated, it leaves little time for the listener to gather their breath as each heavy kick drum continues to pound the speaker into near submission. Mixed with ambient chords, which draw the listener even further into the darkness of the track, ‘Permanence’ keeps on building throughout to a powerful crescendo, providing a clever balance of harshness, soft textures and depth.

"Alessandro Cortini played a rare UK gig last weekend, and regular Sonic TALK panelist Matt Hodson AKA MATTHS was booked in the support slot.

We figured it was a great opportunity to have them talk about their gear selection and approach to the performance.

Alessandro opted for something minimal to support his completely improvised approach, with two Make Noise Strega (these were designed in conjunction with Alessandro) and two 0-CTRL - sequencer/CV controllers, Strymon Blue Sky and Volante all into an Allen and Heath Zone 96 DJ mixer, the laptop runs Resolume visuals for the show.

Matths has a different approach basing his set around pre writtern material and re-voicing larger modular rig, with the Knobula Poly Cinematic for chords, 1010music Bit Box for triggering CV and gates, the Expert Sleepers ES-9 running from the laptop for triggers from Bitwig, the Soma Pulsar-23, Beatstep

Matt uses an analogue parallel compression path to give the stereo feed to front of house a more consistent polished sound.

The video for 'Stalker' focuses on the movement and combinations of fluids, mixing and moving as if to represent those chemical releases inside our bodies. Sometimes these concoctions bring us light and other times darkness.

Overlaying the dynamic visuals is the track itself which plays on the repetition of the same melody over and over again, but each time you hear it, you hear it differently. It can be easy to misinterpret or misunderstand something no matter how many times you hear it. Just which melody and which visual is the truth here?
