"The 101 keyboard provides a 4:4 bass pattern, courtesy of the 104 sequencer, which also provides some gentle modulation, which is increased later.

The 102 is in white shirt and black tie ( albeit loosened) and provides the synth clarinet. The 101 keyboard is triggering it.

The 103 mixer keeps them both together."

The 103 mixer accepts the pair and adds analog warmth & flavour. Reverb is the only seasoning in the 103's cupboard."

I reprogrammed the sequencer, and both lead and bass sounds to be reflective of the internal (mental & emotional) and external changes (climate, terrain, etc) that occur during a long journey."

"As the title suggests, it's a trek across (synth) lands & sands. The sequencer is consistently playing in non 4:4 time due to bank B's pots set to give it a twist in the timing tale/ tail.

the 101 keyboard provides bass duties (as sequenced by the 104 & transposed by its own keyboard) & the 102 provides the richly modulated Eastern- lead like sound, played from the 101's keyboard."

"Modular & Semi Modular synths can be set to self-generate all kinds of effects, noises, and music. It can be both challenging and fun to program the synths to do this.

Here , the 104 sequencer is running at a very low clock speed and has a sequence of notes that are consistently chiming in on the 101 keyboard, which itself has the VCF & the VCA being slowly modulated by it's LFO.

The 102 expander has the sample & hold switched on to both pulse out a note trigger & slowly modulate its the VCF. My occasional interjections are to change the key of the sequence on the 101 keyboard & the 102's drone note; the 102's pitch is affected by the CV input from the 101's keyboard."

"Sometimes, one idea can lead to multiple variations on a theme. And many 60s, 70s & 80s Universal Studios t.v. shows utilsed this mindset with motifs created around the title music.

In Part 1, the sequencer was switched live to go from 4 steps to 8 steps. The basic time signature remained the same.

In Part 2, the sequencer's timing was being changed by bank B's pots. Noise was also used to add a drum part

In this third part, we're still hearing the same 8 notes, but the sequencer speed is being constantly changed by the sample & hold output from the 102 expander.

Note that the low drone pad is also being triggered from the same clock output, but without the lag to smooth out the ramp voltages it's firing out to the 104 sequencer; the speed of the melodic sequence ascends & descends accordingly.

"The Roland System 100 allows you to create more sonic complexity than it initially appears to allow.

Here, the sequencer and LFO on the 102 are syncopated by ear, so there is more happening aurally. The 102's ring modulator is also being fed by the LFO for added sonic seasoning.

The 101's keyboard is triggering a slow LFO swept filter sound & is also transposing the sequence sent by the 104 to 102 in real time.

Towards the end, you can hear how the 102's sound changes as the different modulations are altered in real time."

The Roland System 100 semi modular synthesizer - playing around with the 'Being Boiled ' drum part.

"I think it should be de rigeur to make the being boiled drum pattern for every system 100 owner. It's like a rite of passage to ownership of the synth.

There's a tight sweet spot to get that thumping, meaty kick drum sound. Playing around with the noise options and filter settings on both units yields interesting results."
