The SpazeDrum is a four voice, sixteen part drum synth from Denmark, featuring analog oscillators, digital oscillators as well as sample playback. There are lots of Gotharman typical effects too, as well as digital and analog filters. So the SpazeDrum is quite the beast when it comes to drum sound design of any kind. The preset I play in this video contains all analog sound sources with some digital effects applied. I started it out as an analog bongo preset and then evolved it a little further with other sounds too.

Apart from the deep sound design possibilities, the SpazeDrum also has the sound and sequencer morphing features from the Little deFormer 3 groove box, as well as complex sequencing and polyrhythm capabilities.

The very first melody you hear at the beginning (unmuted part 3) is a digital VCO going through the almost resonant Dual Band SSI Filter, which is modulated by sharp, stepped random generators and an LFO. Later on, at 1:34, I fade in a bass line, which is another digital VCO through the smooth and creamy MiniProphet CEM filter, modulated by an envelope and LFO.

Gotharman‘s Little deFormer 3 can be crunchy or even totally destructively, digitally dirty, so installing one or two (or even more) analog filter boards lets you enter a whole new audio domain with the groove box."

Granular Synth Drone Music w/ Little deFormer 3 #TTNM

I've got four parts running in drone mode, so they don't require any sequencing and their VCAs are constantly open. Tip: Make sure to assign a specific voice number to each part in its TRIG menu, so that there is no drone voice stealing or resetting, when other parts are played by the running sequencer. Then there are three percussion parts and a melody part, with lots of sequencer randomization. Of course I'm also using assigned knobs to control the volume of the parts and there are the two audio and sequence layers between which I morph as well."

Installing a new analog filter only requires nine screws to be removed and put back again, after which you will have completely new sound shaping possibilities in your favourite Danish Groovebox. A regular Little deFormer 3 with an analog board installed (which you can also do yourself) can house up to two different analog filters. There's a real Vacuum Tube filter, an SP-12 filter and several other designs, to add plenty of character to your synth and drum sounds.

Sample chopping is an important basic feature of any sampling groovebox, dating back to the classic Akai MPC, the Korg Electribe boxes and more recent devices like the Elektron Octatrack. Gotharman's Little deFormer 3 offers you three different ways to chop up your audio: manually with a graphical waveform editor, manually in real time and automatically. Chops can then be sequenced like any other sample and even mapped to the keyboard keys for quick and easy jumping between markers.
