Gotharman's Tiny LD: Chill Sample-Based Beat // #TTNM

"I've been watching a lot of Accurate Beats' YouTube videos lately and listened to tons of Brock Berrigan on top of that, so I got in the mood to try out some sample-based beat making on Gotharman's Tiny LD. This was a fun test run! I'm usually more into the experimental side of the Little Deformer 3's smaller sister here, but it worked really nicely as a strange Akai MPC substitute as well.

The main sample was recorded and edited on my iPad in iMPC Pro 2 (not really a big fan of this app to be honest, but it got the job done). I then transferred the WAV file with some additional royalty free 808 drum samples to the Tiny LD with a USB stick. Since the main sample was already looping nicely, I could chop it up automatically on the Tiny LD. Then I used Chop-Keyboard mode to spread the chops over the keyboard keys and keep them all inside a single 'part'. Drums were the already mentioned 808 samples and the Bass and Synths are internal sound engines. The rest is the usual Gotharman sequencing, morphing and effects then :)

"I created some acid techno sounds on Gotharman's TinyLD workstation while I was camping and then recorded this little performance after I got home :-) It's all internal digital sounds, using the current firmware's oscillator and filter models. So no sampling and I also didn't enable the dual analog filter board I have installed in this Tiny Little Deformer 3.

I've got four parts running in drone mode, so they don't require any sequencing and their VCAs are constantly open. Tip: Make sure to assign a specific voice number to each part in its TRIG menu, so that there is no drone voice stealing or resetting, when other parts are played by the running sequencer. Then there are three percussion parts and a melody part, with lots of sequencer randomization. Of course I'm also using assigned knobs to control the volume of the parts and there are the two audio and sequence layers between which I morph as well."

The SpazeDrum is a four voice, sixteen part drum synth from Denmark, featuring analog oscillators, digital oscillators as well as sample playback. There are lots of Gotharman typical effects too, as well as digital and analog filters. So the SpazeDrum is quite the beast when it comes to drum sound design of any kind. The preset I play in this video contains all analog sound sources with some digital effects applied. I started it out as an analog bongo preset and then evolved it a little further with other sounds too.

Apart from the deep sound design possibilities, the SpazeDrum also has the sound and sequencer morphing features from the Little deFormer 3 groove box, as well as complex sequencing and polyrhythm capabilities.

The Tiny LD is the small version of Gotharman's Little deFormer 3 synth & sampler workstation. It runs the same operating system and offers the same features, but with fewer physical controls and expansion options. The small size make it a nicely portable, yet super deep, granular synth all-in-one instrument.

For this jam session I created various synth, noise and drum sounds with the internal digital synth engines of the Tiny LD. I added some of its internal effects and then partly re-sampled the outcome and put it back together in a granularized fashion :D

"In this no-talking sound demo, I demonstrate the overdrive saturation effect of the Herbs and Stones' PATHWAYS.

Inputs 1-3 receive sounds from my Gotharman Little deFormer 3 synthesizer. Output D goes to my recorder and output C is sent back to Input 4, which overdrives the signal. Like this I can fade between the clean and distorted signals and also modulate panning between the two via CV.

PATHWAYS is a 4x4 Matrix Mixer by Herbs and Stones. It features amplification circuitry for each input channel, CV control over every node and various on-board CV generators for modulation fun!
