Isolation No.7 - Buchla 200 #2

Published on Apr 10, 2020 zack dagoba

"Part 7, and final installment, of my first ISOLATION SERIES, exploring self-playing patches on modular systems. You might notice that I have been busy this week making a new cabinet for my Buchla 200 system (the first piece in this series features my original cabinet, which I will be using to put more 100 series modules in at some point). This is a prototype cabinet made from plywood to make sure I am getting the dimensions right. It is based on the original design from the 1971 Series 200 Data Sheet. The final one will be made from walnut, but I can't get hardwood anywhere at the moment due to the lockdown"

Isolation No.1

Published on Mar 29, 2020 zack dagoba

"Here is a 12 minute video of a Buchla 200 playing by itself. Nothing else!

You can put this on in the background while you are doing your self-isolating, it might help pass the time?"

"A pure Buchla composition exploring percussive beats. I'm trying to decide if I should get another Dodeca module or a 292/281/266 combo. And guess what I got myself a cute little Neve 542 mixer which I am learning how to use at the moment as well"

Drifterly

Published on Nov 8, 2019 zack dagoba

"All Buchla 200. And self-playing

Patch Notes:
The 259 VCO goes into a Low Pass Gate, which is being controlled by an envelope created on ch2 of the MARF. Ch1 of the MARF controls the pitch and clocks everything. The signal then goes into the 296 Spectral Processor and has separate frequency bands turned on an off by the 281 Function Generator. The 281 is being triggered by various steps of the MARF, providing 4 slow LFOs. There is also a mixer into which the 277 Delay Unit is fed. A few other things are being modulated on the 259 such as the timbre and symmetry

spectral needs

Published on Sep 19, 2019 zack dagoba

"Purity of Buchla. Nothing else in this one - I set up 7 envelopes on the 200 series, being triggered by 7 trigger outs on the 100 series sequencer. The envelopes control 7 bands on the 296 Spectral Processor, giving it a sort of polyphonic note sequence, the source being a mixture of oscillators and noise. This mono signal was then sent to the Dodeca reverb and the 277 delay unit for stereofication"

be moog

Published on Sep 13, 2019 zack dagoba

"I managed to get the Buchla MARF to play nicely with the Moog Modular. It took a bit of wrangling, mainly by processing the CV out of the MARF to go from 1.2v per octave to the 1v that the Moog needs. I know that it is possible to set the MARF to 1 volt per octave from the back of the unit with some tiny switches, but I would normally be using it with other Buchla modules so I did the voltage scaling with a Moog mixer instead, then used the Dotcom Quantizer. Hopefully you can work out the patch from the video"

multi modulars

Published on Sep 5, 2019 zack dagoba

"Here is a multi-modular patch, whereby I use the Buchla 200 MARF to control the EMS VCS3

This is possible because I modified the VCS3 Jones cable to be able to send and receive CV and gate signals

I’m also using the Roland 100M to add some filter modulation on the VCS3 via the pin matrix

The last bit of the patch is sending some triggered bursts of sound from the output of the VCS3 into the Buchla 200 delay and bandpass filters, which are being modulated by the MARF as well"

Recrochet

Published on Aug 18, 2019 zack dagoba

"Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn

Recrochet is a process of creating sounds on a modular synth by interlocking loops of noise so that they sound a bit like early Tangerine Dream

Another Buchla self-player. Mainly using the 296 Spectral Processor and taking 4 different frequency outputs from it into 4 LPGs and then randomly panning the result with the 102 Stereo Locator"

Update: this original went up at 12:05 PM. I wanted it towards the top but an influx of other posts came in. Be sure to see them below. I opted to move this one up as it really is beautiful imo. This is a vintage Buchla 100 system performed by Benge of http://myblogitsfullofstars.blogspot.com/.

Modcanned

Published on May 13, 2018 zack dagoba

"A bunch of sketches on my new (old) Modcan A modular system. I damn well love this thing! Its such a beautifully designed system - offering utter uniqueness and flexibility. It seems to fall between West-coast and East-coast design philosophies - combining all the good things about modular synthesis in one giant bundle of fun. The system here is made up of original Modcan A modules and also Cyndustries A-format ones. These were made a bit later once the A-series format had become established around the mid 2000's. What is cool is that Cyndustries used to commission / licence designs from well known figures in the synth design world - and put the names of the designers on the front of the modules. It reads like a who's who of the geeky electronic scene, with names like Nyle Steiner, Chris Huggett, Jurgen Haible, Don Buchla, Ken Stone, Bernie Hutchins, Peter Granader, Serge Tcherepnin. It all adds up to an amazing modular experience, like playing with a giant synth museum in a box. See http://myblogitsfullofstars.blogspot.... for more"

"Yet another experiment on the Buchla 200. This one is exploring the MARF, and using the 'stage address' cv input to randomise the way it selects the notes. This thing is so cool

ALSO! I've just noticed that I have got 1000 subscribers, thanks to everyone who has subbed - I'll try and keep my synth related sketches coming...
