Title link takes you videos of Toshio Iwai demoing his work including the Tenori-On and what he states to be the origin of his Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. Make sure to check out the second video in entirety and listen carefully. You can hear him state, "these thoughts, um installations are kind of the origin of Electroplankton."
