filters - New Flickr Shot

flickr by shistec ra. Trips me out that the ARP filter modules came in little boxes like that. Title link takes you to more.

Update via inverse room in the comments:
"The Yamaha SY-2's filters are potted the same way...they were the same as the ones in the GX-1. Check this out, Old Crow tried (successfully) to replicate them by melting away the resin and identifying the parts: link."

  1. The better to hide them from Moog lawyers.

  2. Yeah and now MOTM sells that design as the GX1 vcf.

And the Arp moog vcf isn't equal as the moog lowpass filter from the mini or the 904. Just some bullsht from Moog music somehow.

Just like the story that the Octave Cat had stolen designs from Arp.

  3. Even though none of the lawsuits were successfully carried out, the American synth companies were vicious in the 70's about attempting and threatining to sue.

Seems silly nowadays. The new modular makers seem to be very "open source" about their stuff today.

  4. Arp and Octave's law wranglings were real.
    Moog and Arps were not.

Arp modules were not sealed to hide them from Moog's lawyers or anyone elses.
If that was true, one would have to explain why many other Arp modules were also encapsulated.

  5. The thing that Moog patented was a filter based on a transistor ladder. When Moog sued Arp it was because Arp was using a transistor ladder in there original filter. The patents and circuits are all online, it is obvious that Arp used the Moog filter as the basis of their design. When they redesigned it, they didn't use a ladder. According to "Analog Days", Arp threatened a counter suit based on Arp's patents on a temperature stable expo-converter. At that point both parties backed away.

  7. Moog never sued Arp.

Arp found that Moog was using one of their own patents in the Minimoog.
They settled like gentlemen and no lawyers ever stepped foot in court.
