  3. What's with these synth museums acquiring gear only to sell them for a profit, like Audities and Audio Playground? I call that a store, not a museum. Does anyone else feel it's misleading to look for "donations for the museum" and then resell the stuff?

  4. It is a touch odd. If I donate something to a Museum, and they sell it, it would be proper for them to give you a cut based on a few variables: how long it was on display, the amount it's amortized (up or down), and final resale value.

  5. Umm I'm not seeing a mellotron connection, unless that's the point.

As to museums. Museums do typically sell off similar items that get donated ... and stuff they don't have intention of displaying ... and then maybe better stuff if they are going under. Or maybe they are cashing in some stuff to buy something better they couldn't afford in their budget. Actually that's how most museums buy that really first rate painting for big money. They sell some stuff off that hopefully their patrons aren't so fond of in order to buy a new star attraction. Primarily if you just donate stuff you are doing so to get a tax writeoff (if it is indeed a real museum).

Now on the other hand, if you gave them something that's really important to you and you want it to stay there, then you probably ought to bring in the lawyers and set up a restricted donation before you donate. That would mean you agree that the the museum could only sell or trade it under certain spelled out circumstances.

  6. I heard David Kean of the Audities Foundation sells their museum gear through Rick Smith who's usually "selling it for a friend". If it's true, that would be pretty sneaky. Why not sell it directly? I don't think the generous soles who donate their gear or sell it to them cheap for inclusion in their collection suspect it's going to be resold for top dollar. I heard Kean bought a Lamborghini or 2 with the money he made flippin synths. I'd like to donate my gear too so he can buy himself a private jet! ;) Would any museum curators care to comment on the sale of their gear and the profits made? Also, I always wondered what kind of salary they drew from their non-profits.

  7. Why would anybody donate a synth?? Unless Smitshsonian or something legit like that wanted it. I would never donate something to a random dude with a website.

  8. Don't be a dope. First of all, Kean has had money LONG before Audities. Secondly, all but 5 instruments in that collection were paid for by him personally. Third, Audities.org doesn't mention a word about YOU making a donation. Fourth, I have bought a couple of things from Dave over the years and I doubt very seriously that he needs this Rick Smith guy to sell anything. And lastly, they offer free studio time to people that submit to their grant program all the time. This is slander.
Get your facts straight or shut the fuck up.

  9. This post is old but i thought I'd pipe up since iam just reading this. I am the particular "rick smith" in question. I at one time helped kean sell HIS gear (not the audities foundation gear) I helped because I was offered compensation to provide my time which at that time kean was in short supply of. There was nothing sneaky about it.
