Automatic Tubular Bells

Wow, this is pretty cool. Via Jordi B:

"I often visit your page, and I think that the new MIDI device I am building could be of your interest. It is a set of MIDI controlled Tubular Bells. I’m still working on it, but I think it will be ready soon. I send you this video in case you’d like to post it. It shows the device being tested playing the musical scale notes. It can play one octave melodies ( C,C#,D,D#,E….) and can be controled through a PC or a MIDI secuencer ( I’m developing this option now )."

  1. Just a few thoughts:

    - The bells sound very bright because they are being struck horizontally near the middle. To emulate actual tubular bells, they should be struck diagonally (with a leather hammer) at the end.

    - Rather than trying to interface directly to sequencer software, such a device will be more versatile if it can be operated standalone via MIDI. There are many existing hardware solutions to help do this.

    - Theater organ "toy box" tubular bells have existed for decades, and should probably be studied for reference.

  3. Thanks for posting the video : ) and for the advice! I will consider them in the next version of the instrument. Another cause of this bright sound is the material, diameter, and the short length of the tubes (their average length is 40cms ). All this causes higer frecuency harmonics. About MIDI, I'm working on it, and hope it will be controlable thorugh stand alone MIDI soon.
I'll send you another video when I finish it all.
    C U soon
