EMS Synthi 100 Shots

No title link. Two shots via an anonymous reader.

"This one is in xtremely good condition (BTW:there are way more than 3 funktional)and more as 24 build to. The matrixes are as new on this one. Amazing Its very confusing to patch this monster,I don’t like it at all,if you like to patch analog computers, you will be happy to work with this synth. The sound is identically to an AKS. Perhaps I could buy this one for 16000$ or so,but im not interested to do the effort, and BTW iv not the place at home! Note that it seems (and also on this model) the sequencer never have working correctly (on any models) The guy told me that when the have buy the instrument new I din’t worked, and a few times (on request) a tec from EMS have come on location to try fix it,but never was able to. The second pic matrix is from the synth museum book." Check out the books on the right pane of this site for the Museum of Synthesizer Technology.

  1. Well as to numbers, everyone quotes is "around 30". I doubt the actual number could possibly be far off.
Maybe there is a unit or two that are one off variations that might not officially be Synthi 100s.

I wonder how many are verified as destroyed?

As to "3 working" it seems pretty obvious that some know-it all said that based that on the ones that that person had personal knowlege about. If you think about it. What would qualify as working anyway? Unless you just spent thousands restoring it, it's not all going to be working. It's also not like there are many parts that would stop the whole thing from not working. My guess based on laws of averages is there are a just couple with recent servicing and checkups. A majority that mostly work except for this or that... or this that and a dozen other things. A few in storage in unknown working order. You know...maybe they lost the power cord on a couple ;-0 Would that mean it's not working??Or what about a bad power supply but otherwise good electronics? It's not like it has a motherboard.

    1. In July 2014, I commenced restoration of the UoM Synthi100. I spent 6 months (part-time) ultrasonic cleaning the circuit cards that had dust and surface oxidation on them. Removed, cut open, cleaned and lubricated the 185 the potentiometers. I replaced the all the large value capacitors on the power rails.
Rewired the 240V mains with double insulated cable, replaced patch pins and manuals and fixed about 20 minor electronic faults. In the ABC storey 2014 stated I knew of about 3 (maybe 4) Synthi 100’s that have been restored to original specifications. There is another 2 or 3 that are work in progress !
