"The Sequential Circuits Pro-8 is a very rare analogue synth. It was sold as the Split-8 and only a few Pro-8s were produced and were actually considered to be only a rumor. It is a very rare synth indeed.
It is an 8 voice bi-timbral analogue and sonically very similar to the Sixtrak and Multitrak. The voices can be layered, split or used in Unision mode for absolutely incredible 8 oscillator stacked basses and leads!! This is a very rare and cool machine."
For what it's worth, it's may very well be very rare outside of Japan. In japan it's at least as if not more common the Split-Eight is outside Japan. The two synths are pretty similar also. You'll seem many more Prophet 600s an 106s in Japan but it's far from rare.

ReplyDeleteIn order to break into the Japanese market, SCI shipped the CEM 3394 chip and the firmware for the Sequential Six-Trak to an other Japanese manufacturer. The plan was to have that manufacturer design a synthesizer targeted at the Japanese buyer. They created an 8-voice bi-timbral version of the Six-Trak calling it the Pro-8. Sequential, liking what the Japanese manufacturer had done with their design and worrying that they might market their synth with one of their competitors (ie. Korg), asked for some design changes and a name change, and sold the Japanese-made synth as the Split-8.
