Korg Legacy MS-20

I'm beginning to want one of these. I wonder how playable the hardware is and if it's the sort of thing that's fun the first ten times and then you put it away for your main controller. Would have been cool if it were a self contained unit like the Creamware ASB boxes.

  1. Hey Matrix,
I've had this unit for a month now and it really changed my way of making music. I have real analog synths and love their interfaces, the Ms-20ic (controller)gives me the same ease of use, with patch storage. The unison/detune features are really a plus for the MS-20. The polysix sounds amazing too but the ms-20 with its controller are just mind-blowing. The SOS review sold me on it, and i got it for 214$ canadian taxes and shipping included (from Tom Lee music). It's the first synth i buy new, and its still an amazing deal. The keyboard sucks a little, but years of training on my Yamaha cs-01 got me used to that. You'll probably want to use a different keyboard for expressive playing, but for arpeggios and such it's fine.

  2. Cool. Thanks JB. I really liked the Polysix softsynth as well, when I played with the demo for a bit. I'm tempted... It's been a while since I picked up a new synth.

  3. I have one here, it s really handy, but the main problem with it, to me, is that knobs action is not precise enough, for exemple, when you want to make a slight detune on a vco, you jump from a value to another, but don t have values between (probably because of midi quantize values)

  4. i got mine a few months ago when they were blowing them out for $150 at novamusik.

after a few minutes, you forget you're controlling a vsti and it feels just like any other synth. really nice, imo.

if you buy new, make sure you get the latest rev.. korg has switched to a syncrosoft dongle and future updates will cost ye if you've got the non-dongle version. (which explains the blowout, eh?)

  5. i barely use my ms20 controller these days.
I think the controller would be a TON more useful if
    a) the patch ports actually transmitted and received control voltages and let me use the ESP with direct audio signals.
    b) the ms20 controller would work properly when running ms20 as a VSTi in cubase/logic/sonar/whatever

i found it was overall most useful for designing sounds on that i would later use the VSTi for.
You could just as easily use the gui for the same task, but its not quite as tactile as using the mini controller.

Otherwise, i'd just use my real ms20 for the CV and ESP stuff.
