  1. I think it will be quite a while before a poly superior to the Andromeda is released.

  2. It's like the dinosaurs. Huge, amazing beasts that used to roam the planet are gone. Now, huge amazing synths that used to roam the planet have gone.

The planet is dying, it's just taking a few hundred million years.

  3. Anonymous, I agree. I'm really curious how it will be viewed in time. It really is a mind blowing synth. People tainted it by comparing it to other classic analogs instead of judging it for it's own sound. I almost think this is the bane of most synths during the same time period. Instead of exploring the synth for it's own sound everyone was comparing it to MOOG, Roland, Oberheim, etc. The Viscount Oberheim OB12 is a classic example. Calling it "Oberheim" killed it.

As for other poly analogs, I think the Sunsynth and of course the PEKs and the Omega 8 are in the same ballpark, but the A6 is just pretty incredible. It has 16 voices compared to the others, it's fully analog, it has two filters, a crazy modulation bus and it sounds pretty amazing.

  4. I think the Andromeda's biggest problem is the software implementation of the user interface. It is not set to default on the sweet spots of the synth and is just confusing in general. When programming it, I feel like an engineer not a musician.

If they had designed it so that it effortlessly made its best sounds, and was still able to do wackier stuff with the menu diving and tweaking, it would have done better.

As it is, it takes a while to grow into it, and most peoples first impression is slight disappointment.

  5. I think Andromeda's biggest problem is the on-board effects and the headroom of the main stereo mix.

But, luckily, you can shut off the effects and send from the 16 outs instead. It's good if you send from the 16 outs to a passive summing bus, and into a ncie pre-amp. Probably more than doubles the punch of the synth.

  6. I really want an andromeda. Isn't the dave smith one a polysynth?? The andromeda might have more voices. I think I like spending time making patches nobody has ever heard, so the A6 would be perfect for me.
