hey matrix (and everyone else), long time no chat.
ReplyDeletei have one of these things that i picked up used for $125 Canadian. they sound exactly like the 303 (with the added option of mixing in a square wave instead of only the sawtooth wave). i use it all the time and it sounds fantastic. given that 303's sell around here (Toronto) for over $1000 i think that's a pretty good steal. If you've been looking for the 303 sound but don't want to shell out the ridiculous prices, this is a great option.
I wish I had not sold mine. The envelope was quicker than the future retro 777 I had.

A nicer look and what it sounded like before I traded it for a ER-1.
I have one of these too, bought it years ago when Sam Ash was blowing them out. It's sound is good, but when you sequence it with something like the 777 it really shines.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I wouldn't say that it sounds exactly like a 303 but, really, who cares because it is good on its own merits and isn't outrageously expensive. IMHO, it sounds a bit different than a Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9 too. In fact, I never really thought that any of the first wave of 303 emulators really sounded like a 303, but they still were good machines in their own right. I still remember the days when Future Music magazine flogged the Novation Bass Station as a 303 emulator, which it isn't and never will be.
Other similar units are the Doepfer MS404, Syntechno Tee Bee (which has a ring mod function too), and the Will Systems MB303 (?). I'm sure there are more '1st wave' 303 emulators out there, and I'm not even considering the newer wave that includes machines such as the X0Xb0x.
