The Yamaha YC45D is an organ, however I'm wondering if it had any synth-like capabilities, particularly in the bass section. You can find the manual here. If anyone knows more about the YC45D, feel free to comment.

A great request for a great blog: TONTO'S EXPANDING HEAD BAND-RIDES AGAIN (re-post?)Thanks-NATURE BOY
ReplyDeleteI have a Yamaha YC-45D. It is almost as much synth as it is organ. I'm surprised at some of the very modern synth type sounds that come from my YC-45D.
ReplyDeleteThe sound tabs on the Yamaha's work somewhat like drawbars, you can adjust the volume of each stop, not just get on/off as found on many other organs.
There is a slider tab that controls the overall tone of the basic stops. When it is off the sound is somewhat like Hammond but with a slightly softer attack/release and more clean sound overall.
When you turn it onto bright you not only change the waveform of the stops from sine/flute to a bright square wave. The 16' on the upper manual changes to saw instead of square.
That control also adjusts the attack time until it can become very aggressive. The effect on the lower manual is a different sound than on the upper. It also adds quite a bit of click at key on and off. On the upper manual the click effect is more subtle.
There is a filter that sounds like a band pass or formant filter but you have no cutoff or resonance controls, just on/off. It can give a bit of wah on key trigger or on key modulation. The key modulation is unlike most other instruments, you ca wiggle the keys left and right to add vibrato or control filter wah effect.
Lots of extras - built in fuzz is cool. There is a Ribbon controller with a few waveforms of its own.
There are no detuned sounds, so it often sounds like Juno with no chorus. I use mine with a Dimension-C pedal.
Great quick descrption. Thanks for the info!

ReplyDeleteA masterpiece indeed.
DeleteThere is now some footage of him playing his YC45D on YouTube. ("Terry Riley rare footage, live in the 70s")

Hello, greetings from El Salvador! this day bought a Yamaha SY-45D is very pretty, the sound is amazing, I love it. Complete in its looks, still has some functions to fail, as the bar ... and the rotary, I play in a band that plays rock music 70s, 80s and 90s all the most popular of those times, and this organ could be the center of the base to play music, "The Doors", Santana, great funk music and rock of the era.
ReplyDeleteWe chatted and I tell you that that I go with the new toy.

Some weird noises on the Pink Floyd's Shine on you crazy diamond intro were done with he yamaha yc45D ribbon controler. The presets used are 'birds' and 'squawk'. The vibraphone preset is also used on this intro.
