Vintage synth featured in 1957 film "Different from You and Me."

video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synths

"The dangers of electronic music, according to a film about the menace of homosexuality from 1957 called 'Different From You and Me'. It features the Trautonium, a synthesizer from the 1930s that was created by Friedrich Trautwein and used by Oskar Sala. The film, which was called 'The Third Sex' or 'Bewildered Youth'(!) when released in the US, is about a prosperous German family whose son is lured into a seedy world of gay men, nude wrestling and avant garde electronic music by an effete friend and a licentious antique dealer.

Terrified that their son is not into women, the teen's parents induce their cleaning lady to seduce him and awaken his more 'natural' desires. This ends in the month's arrest for arranging prostitution!

While the film is based on homophobic ideas, the original version has some nuance and depicts some of its gay characters in a relatively balanced light for the time. Being gay was still a crime in Germany and elsewhere in the 1950s. However, before it could be released in West Germany censors insisted on changes, weaving in more anti-gay rhetoric, making the gay characters more criminal and removing scenes that showed gay men in positions of authority and respectability.

For me, it's remarkable only for the scenes featuring the synthesizer, but it is interesting that even then electronic music was associated with same-sex relationships, given that 20 years later the gay communities would be such a driving force behind the foundation of the electronic music scene.

I have uploaded all the scenes from this film that feature the Trautonium to my YouTube channel, which is also called Robotussin Vintage Synths."

Patchwerks Featured on Local Seattle News

video upload by KING 5

"A worker at one Seattle store said it looked like they were going out of business because inventory is so low right now." Patchwerks comes in halfway into the video.

Update: found the video on YouTube. Much better embed for the site. You can find the article on KING5 here.

I thought this was pretty cool. Patchwerks was featured on Seattle's KING5 news channel yesterday and today. The segment, as you can see, focused on supply chain issues impacting everyday shopping and seasonal items at Puget Sound retailers. It's fun seeing familiar synth heads featured on public TV.

Casio DH-100 Digital Horn Spotted in Until the End of the World

This one is in via swissdoc

"I was watching this 1991 movie recently, Until the End of the World, and spotted a Casio DH100 digital horn in a brief moment. See attached screenshot. The movie has some nice music in it (as you can see on the Wiki page). They kind of "Google" for one of the guys in the story and when one special search program is used, the sound which can be heard is one of the Waldorf Microwave presets.

I was watching the film at the movies when it came out in 1991 and this sound I did remember. The DH100 I did not remember, but it could be as well, it was only in the directors cut."

Synth Spotting in Soigne Ta Droite / Keep Up Your Right - 1987

video by heung jun oh

Some Cocteau Twins style drums.

This one is in vis swissdoc who had the following to say:

"I came across this recently in a very special artistic movie by director Jean-Luc Godard from Romandy (Suisse romande - the French-speaking part of western Switzerland).

The movie is called Keep Your Right Up (French: Soigne ta droite / Une place sur la terre) from 1987. It is featuring Catherine Ringer and Fred Chichin from the group Les Rita Mitsouko in some scenes in a musical studio showing some synths."

Here's the trailer for the film:

Soigne ta droite - Bande annonce

video by Gaumont

There's an additional music scene here but no synths.

Below are a few screen grabs via swissdoc. You can spot an Oberheim Four Voice System, a Moog Memorymoog, and what appears to be an Elka Rhapsody 610 below and to the right of the FVS. Update: one more pic added below of what looks like the back of an OB-1.

Early Analog Band - Fender Chroma Musical Instruments 1982

video by Brigida Family

"Rare vintage footage! This product demonstration for Fender Chroma features a performance by Mike Brigida, John Shykun & Cleve Pozar.

16:50 closes with John Williams 'Indiana Jones Theme' & 'Superman'"

And a note from the Rhodes Chroma list:

"The 'Expander's they show don't seem to have the same setup as a typical expander today. Specifically, the expander panel looks to be identical to that of the Chroma - and so has a extra black metal lip on the front. It is much more of a 'keyboard-chopped-off-Chroma' versus what ended up being the Expander.

Somewhat of a prophetic quote from one of the questions and answers in the video:

Q. How long before the Chroma is obsolete?

A. Chroma is an expressive, powerful musical instrument. Since it sounds good and has terrific expansion capability it stands the best chance among products available today of lasting the longest."
