"The Cheetah MS6 is six-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer in a 1u 19” rack. It was launched in 1988 by Welsh company Cheetah who blazed a brief but glorious trail through the world of music tech in the mid to late 80s before imploding in 1993. The MS6 is based around a fairly conventional two oscillator > low pass filter > dual ADSR envelope architecture implemented on six Curtis CEM3396 chips, one per voice, which were also used in the Oberheim Matrix 6, 6R and 1000.

The MS6 is often compared to the Matrix 1000 because of its similar form factor and circuitry. I can’t comment on how valid that is sonically because I’ve never used a Matrix 1000, but it should be noted that, unlike the Matrix 1000, sounds on the MS6 can be created and edited from the front panel without an external programmer. Although you may wish to add one, for reasons I’ll go into further down.

Cheetah MS6 Synthesizer [Demo 01] Can I Edit Sounds Using Cubase?

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2023

Ah the Cheetah MS6 DCO Synth module. Let's get real, front panel editing is no fun and slow af. I want to use Cubase to edit the sounds. Will it work?

Where I found Cheetah MS6 firmware update Eprom

Where I found Cheetah MS6 Cubase Device panel

Recorded direct, only the onboard effects are used. No other mastering or effects have been added."

"Beautiful CEM-based synthesis in a rack, with lot of possible edition. Upgraded to Maad OS v1.3. Rack ears are ok, slightly bent but will fit perfectly in a rack."

"Up for sale is very rare Cheetah MS6 Multitimbral Analog Synthesizer Module, produced in UK in the '80s. It's famous for having the same sound chips (CEM 3396) as the Oberheim Matrix 6/6R and Matrix 1000, but with multitimbral feature.

The unit is fully functional and in great shape. It has the most recent firmware update, MAAD V1.3. The original firmware chip is also included."

Pic of the inside below.

"Vintage 80s analogue polysynth, handbuilt in Cardiff!

Six dual oscillator voices from Curtis CEM chips.

Two oscillators per voice, 24dB filter, 2x ADSRs, LFO, PWM, Sync, 6-voice Poly, Velocity sensitive, up to 6-part multitimbral.. pretty comprehensive in a 1 unit rack and sounds good too!

Editing is straightforward from the front panel, though you won't be reading them from the top surface once it's racked! I'm sure there's editing software too, or an external box such as the Kiwi controller (which has an MS6 template) would make this a dream to use. Latest v.9.0 Cheetah OS too.

Very nice condition for an MS6 and fully working. Only noticeable marks are around the rack ears, and you don't see those once racked up. Very clean inside too. I replaced the battery last year and it still has the factory presets in it, have just used a couple of the string/ synth pads really. Have tested it edits and saves new sounds, however. You have 5 banks of ROM presets and another 2 for user patches."

Previous issues have ads for the Roland MC-202.

Debut LP Magazine was a zine from 1984 that featured an LP showcasing various artists.  You can find the list of them on Discogs here.  This was the UK version.  There was a German version before it. They are great look back in time.
