early tests with Buchla Lightning + Max; once again, using a Buchla controller as a way of testing different parametric linkages / interaction strategies for what i hope will eventually become a standalone instrument. in this case, lightning is sending several position-related CCs to Max, which is running several simultaneous [gen~] patches. these patches were originally developed for several daisy-based modules i designed, namely:

2x Impulse Generator (a pulsar synthesis-based oscillator and nonlinear distortion feedback device)
1x Retention Mechanism (a granular sampler / multitap delay / pitch shifter)
1x Temporal Drag Processor (a multitap delay / resonator)

i only recently acquired the Lightning; here, i'm using it with the rings from a Buchla 222e Multidimensional Kinesthetic Input Port. the use here is quite basic, relying mostly on the Lightning "Ear's to MAX" factory configuration. no doubt i'll keep exploring more unusual ways to use it in the future

Voidcontrol MIDI Releases e7 Unofficial Editor: DAW Integration for the GS Music e7

e7 Unofficial Editor - VST3 Demo video upload by Voidcontrol MIDI

"VST3 editor for the GS e7. Real DAW automation, easily build multitimbral patches, patch library, A/B snapshots, morph, and resizable UI. Windows 10/11. Available at voidcontrolmidi.com."

Press release follows:

Voidcontrol MIDI has released the e7 Unofficial Editor, a Windows VST3 plugin that lets you control and automate the GS Music e7 from within a DAW, just like a software instrument.

The e7 is a remarkable analog polysynth with a passionate community and a genuinely unique sound, but editing it properly from a DAW has often meant menu diving on the hardware. This editor was designed to make that seamless. All 88 of the e7's parameters are on screen, laid out to mirror the front panel, with real DAW automation on every control rather than just MIDI learn.

Features include:

Full parameter control: every one of the e7's 88 parameters on one screen, with authentic readouts for oscillator tune, tempo-synced LFO rates, and waveform shapes.

Real DAW automation lanes for every parameter.

A patch librarian: browse, audition, load, rename, import and export single presets, whole banks, or full instrument backups as standard .syx files.

Multi-mode support: edit 4-part multitimbral patches with per-part level, MIDI channel, voice allocation, and key/velocity zones.

A/B snapshots with an automatable morph slider.

Two-way hardware sync: pull the synth's current edit buffer into the editor in one click, with the editor recalling its state on project load.

Init and a musical randomizer for fresh starting points.

A resizable interface with onboard help.

A standalone version is also included for use without a DAW, working as a pure hardware controller that needs no audio interface.

The editor has been tested in Ableton Live, Bitwig, Cubase, Reaper, and Studio One, with USB and 5-pin DIN MIDI, MPE support, and a one-click All Notes Off panic.

"The e7 sounds incredible. I just wanted to see all of it at once, especially the multitimbral side," said Dave of Voidcontrol MIDI.

Voidcontrol MIDI is a small US-based developer making editors for boutique and classic hardware synths. The e7 Unofficial Editor is its third release, after editors for the Roland SE-02 and Oberheim OB-6. A macOS version is under consideration.

The e7 Unofficial Editor is available now at voidcontrolmidi.com for an introductory $30 USD through July 7, 2026, after which it returns to its regular price of $40 USD.

The e7 Unofficial Editor is a third-party tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by GS Music. "e7" is a trademark of its respective owner.

Cherry Audio | Expressive Sound Design with Andrew Longhurst

video upload by Cherry Audio

"More expressive performance can be achieved through various technologies and techniques such as velocity, channel aftertouch (pressure), polyphonic aftertouch, and MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE). These features allow compatible synthesizer instruments and controllers to mimic the subtle dynamics of acoustic instruments.

In this video, musician, producer, and sound designer ‪@AndrewLonghurst‬ demonstrates his approach to expressive sound design, showcased through his collection of presets for Ensoniq ESQ-1 by Cherry Audio. He provides demonstrations of each technique using the new Expressive E Osmose CE MIDI controller and discusses his choices for setting up these advanced modulations in a preset.

These techniques can be widely applied to other Cherry Audio virtual instruments. Be sure to check the product feature listings and documentation to determine which instruments specifically support some or all of these methods. Additionally, consult your MIDI controller documentation, as compatibility for channel aftertouch, polyphonic aftertouch, and especially MPE can vary significantly in this evolving market.

B67 ZEN-FM Synthesis - Editor-Librarian 2.0

video uploads by Benedetto Schiavone

Follow-up to New 3rd Party Hidden Sysex Based ZEN-Core Editor-librarian for MC-101 and MC-707

Playlist:

1. B67 ZEN-FM Synthesis - Editor-Librarian 2.0 - ZEN-Core Tone collection 3 (2026)
2. Benis67 - ZEN-Core Tone Collection 3 (2026) - Demo Sounds
3. B67 ZEN-Core editor librarian V.2 - Video manual

Press release follows:

"B67 ZEN FM" synthesis engine (4 operators with linear FM + 4 wave shapes) for all Roland instruments that support the ZEN-Core standard: new editor and sound collection.

The new ZEN-Core Editor Librarian V2.0 (PC and MAC) is now available for Roland synthesizers from the Fantom, AX-Edge, and Jupiter-X/Xm.

Among many new features, it allows editing of a new synthesis engine, fully compatible with the ZEN-Core standard, which uses linear FM synthesis (4 operators) and 4 modulable operator waveshapes

The "B67 ZEN FM" synthesis engine is achieved through a special implementation of a ZEN-Core tone that allows access to only a limited number of synthesis parameters, leaving the others predefined and inaccessible (e.g., Structure 1-2/3-4 = XMOD2, Osc Type = VA).

Specifically, the modulation matrix is "locked" with predefined Source and Destination parameters to ensure correct modulations that operate on the main FM synthesis parameters.

Real-time editing is performed on a new page containing all the synthesis parameters, the operator frequencies settable via the freq. ratio parameter (0.25, 0.5, 0.78, 1, 1.5, 1.57, 1.78, 2, 3, 3.5, 4.5, etc.), the waveforms (SIN, SIN2, TRI, TRI2, TRI3, SAW, SQR, RAMP, JUNO), the graphic display of the 8 envelopes (4 for FM and 4 for shapes), a dedicated librarian (2048 sounds), 20 tone presets, 8 ENV presets, a clipboard, and the ability to copy and paste synthesis parameters.

Each sound is associated with one of the 93 MFX multi-effects, which can be edited in the dedicated section.

By applying waveshaping to the 4 operators' waveforms (via the FAT and PW parameters) and modulating them with 4 dedicated ENVs, the synthesis engine can replicate the phase distortion (PD) synthesis famous in Casio CZ synths.

When using sine wave oscillators and modulating their PW with the dedicated ADSR ENVs, the overall synthesis structure becomes similar to that of an 8-operator FM algorithm, as shown in the image: 4 operators (1, 2, 3, and 4) can have their frequencies freely configured, while the other 4 modulate the corresponding carriers and modulators with a 1:1 ratio.

Polyphony is 22 voices for all synthesizers, pianos, keyboards, wind instruments, guitar synths, and virtual instruments compatible with the ZEN-Core standard. This is reduced to 11 voices for the MC-101, MC-707, and VERSELAB MV-1 grooveboxes.

Simplified graphical editing of all parameters, sound management via the librarian, and parameter recall for subsequent editing is only possible with the ZEN-Core Editor Librarian V2.0.

The new B67 ZEN-Core Collection 3 (197 ZEN-Core tones in total) is also available, including 112 tones created with the "B67 ZEN-FM" synthesis engine.

Thanks to full compatibility with the ZEN-Core standard, these sounds can be used on all compatible instruments and virtual instruments: Zenology Pro, Zenbeats (ZC-1), FP-E50, RD-88, RD-08, Juno-D, Juno-X, V-Stage, MC-101, MC-707, Verselab MV-1, GM-800, Aerophone AE-20 Pro AE-30, GO:KEYS 5, GO:KEYS 3.

Along with the collection, the sounds with the B67 ZEN-FM synthesis engine also come with a proprietary file format that can be edited and managed within the Editor/Librarian V2.0 section, available for Fantom, AX-Edge, and Jupiter-X/Xm.

Among the various sounds in the collection, created with this synthesis, are emulations of some "classic" Yamaha DX7 sounds (Marimba, Vibe, Celesta, Bakket, Jazz Guitar, Tubular Bell, EPiano, Bowed Strings, Brass, Synth Bass, Metal, etc.) and original sounds that use FM and Wave Shape synthesis for new sounds with complex and evolving harmonic spectra.

The upgrade to version 2.0 of the ZEN-Core Editor Librarian for Fantom, AX-Edge, and Jupiter-X is free (it can be found in the Gumroad repository or through the paywall of those who purchased it).

Collection 3 (197 ZEN-Core tones, including 112 created with the B67 ZEN-FM synthesis engine) is available individually, in the "best of" version, and bundled with other collections and editors.

Vekte Public Beta Now Open

You might remember Vekte from this previous post. The public beta for it is now open. Details follow:

"Vekte is a generative MIDI sequencer plugin. It runs 31 algorithms — Euclidean, Markov, cellular automata, Xenakis sieves, Kaprekar, logistic maps, and more — and uses them to write patterns to drive your instruments.

Every channel has one note lane and four modulation lanes. Each lane runs its own algorithm and can target velocity, length, any CC, transpose, scale, chord, octave, or another lane's parameters, with sixteen slots per session (which can be either routed freely to any channel, including multiple slots controlling one single channel).

The engine is deterministic. Each pattern is hashed from its algorithm and parameters into a seed, so a given configuration always produces the same result. Patterns are exact and repeatable, and you can export any state as a preset string to recall later or hand to someone else (this part is still WIP, and will be improved massively in the next one).

It began as the software side of Rekke, our hardware sequencer, and the two share part of the same algorithmic core.

This is a public beta. VST3 only for now, on Windows and macOS. AU and an iOS AUv3 build are planned, but I want VST3 solid first. Free during the beta.

I'm after real feedback: what breaks, which hosts misbehave, what's confusing, what's missing. Bug reports and DAW-specific quirks are the most useful thing you can send (you have a form in the menu for direct feedback from the app).

"Annulus is a six-mode resonator instrument for the modern music producer who treats sound like material. Modal, FM, string, and sympathetic voices feed directly into tape delay, shimmer reverb, and analog drive — a full sounddesign chain in one plugin, shaped by four expressive macros. At home in any musictech setup: fast to sketch a melody, deep enough to lose hours in texture.

The engine

Annulus routes your signal through four linked processors:

Rings: a MIDI-driven polyphonic resonator based on Mutable Instruments' Rings, running six distinct physical modeling algorithms. Eight voices spread across the stereo field with velocity and position randomization for organic variation on every hit.

Spiral: a stereo tape delay with tempo sync, ping-pong routing, wobble modulation, and saturated feedback.

Velvet: an algorithmic reverb with shimmer, diffusion, ducking, and a four-second tail.

Distortion: twelve waveshaping models at 2× oversampling, from soft tube warmth to asymmetric fuzz.

Four macro knobs: Morphe, Aigle, Nothros, Topos. Reach across the entire chain simultaneously. One gesture shapes the resonator, the delay, the reverb, and the drive at once. Topos also integrates into the visualizer's rotation, tying the image to the physics of the sound."
