All these videos with the sound recorded through the camera's mic are utterly pointless. Please use a $2.00 cable to go into to your camera's line in (if you can afford it after the 200e) ;)
So...Do I need to spend $12,000 Or should I buy a Banjo and a Fuzz box?

I personally think that any video of something like the 200e is welcome...we should be thankful there is somebody who takes the time to put stuff like this online.

This is probably one of my fave Buchla vids so far. Better video quality, and sound is okay.

ReplyDeleteThe 200e's awesomeness (and priciness) go without saying, but it's kinda sad that these things are destined to not be commonly heard beyond wealthy geek basements and mobile phone videos.
I love the look. Total cable mayhem. Lots of blinking lights to marvel at and tons of switches and knobs to play with. It's like a stoner's wet dream. Would drive the neighbours crazy. You sure need small hands, though.

Isn't it obvious. People who could afford gear like this probably wouldn't be wasting their time chit chatting here. These people are bitter that they don't have the kind of money they'd need to pay for one of these. Typical whiners. Get a job. Earn some money. If you spent all your whining energy doing something productive, you'd have the money to buy the things smarter people can buy.
One more thing...Enough with the banjo jokes, people. It's officially dead. I checked its pulse. Nothing. It's even starting to smell.

And for the record, these people are not rich kids I believe. They work for their dough... I am sure there ARE some inherently rich people who love synths, but please don't drag hard working people down along as well... Some people buy cars, some spend on gambling, and that well be over $20 000, these people get the Buchla... so I won't say things that is too presumptious...

ReplyDeleteI think the Buchla provokes a lot of responses for two reasons:
ReplyDelete1) It's probably the most expensive synth being produced at the moment, I think? Yet it mostly seems to make experimental noises that appeal to a small niche audience, and of course the creator. This is an interesting combination: expensive, powerful, but with results that have, as Spinal Tap would put it, "selective appeal". A lot of people probably expect a $20k synth to write #1 hits for them. Instead, it is this strange expensive esoteric creature that exudes self indulgence on every level: financial, creative, technical. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
2) The people who buy it have a habit of claiming it is all powerful and can create any sound, and yet it is rarely used to create what most synthesists consider "normal" sounds. This apparent disconnect between theory ("It can do anything!") and reality (insert banjo joke here) provokes a lot of discussion, and the "I could do it if I wanted to, I just don't want to!" arguments just incite people to jump to the conclusion the emperor has no clothes.
All that said I quite liked the demo, it was more musical than other Buchla demos I've heard and I could actually see those sounds being used in a "real" song. Not that sounds have to be able to be used that way to be any good, it's just that usually I hear Buchla demos and think it is so strange and out there that I wonder if it is capable of creating anything I would actually use. Again, not that it has to do that, but it's certainly a limitation if it can't, or even if it is unsuited for doing so and has to be pushed hard to get there.
Anyway, nice demo.
I've yet to see a single Buchla owner claim it can do anything. It can do it's own thing, it's very very own thing, that I've heard. Anything? Not once. Absurdity incarnate. Where's proof of this being said by an actual 200e owner?

During the banjo solo, the banjo rhythm section was great.
The fanfare of banjos at the end was especially awesome.
I like the fiddle parts too, but that banjo music just makes me cry.
Did I mention that I really, really liked the banjos?

ReplyDeleteI took this quote above, and removed the word Buchla and inserted a placeholder. This sentence holds true for me as well inserting almost any other Synth name there.
You see this is the blessing of the Buchla instruments (yeah, in general). It does the unusual sounds, it helps the performer to find new sounds. I couldn't care less if it can't do the stereotype Synth sounds. I don't need that anyway, i would never use it. In fact, i am carefully avoiding it in my music.
The 200e is not everyones salvation. I totally agree that there are far cheaper and easier paths to the classic synth timbres. But for people like myself it is the perfect tool.

And johan, that's cool if your focus is on making sounds that other synths don't create and the Buchla provides that for you. As long as you state it that way, I doubt it will provoke much of a reaction from anyone, since we've all heard first hand a lot of weird, out there demos from it.
Just don't throw in that "Sure, it could make a wicked acid 303 lead if I wanted it to, I just choose not to" unless you can back it up, or you're going to get people calling you on it.
And no, I'm not claiming you ever said that. And no, I'm not criticizing the Buchla for not being able to make a sound like a 303. I'm just responding to the question of why the thing generates controversy whenever it's brought up.
It generates controversy because it's pricey, rare and beautiful.

ReplyDeleteCertainly not, I spent 100000 $ in synthesizers, samplers and computers. I need to create new sounds, but I would never buy a 200e. It' s not a question of money, just a problem to have an efficient product.
this demo is not bad. But I do a better job with my ARP 2600 or my EMS synthi AKS.

The comments on this site especially those on modular synthesizers are hateful. Like you can make that with a $20 synthesizer; and the class and envy warfair. People put these videos up to show the rest of us what they look and sound like. The focus is the the synthesizer not the music, or musical talent of their owners. Is our job as modular synthesizers owners to educate and entertain you. If some of you haters out there are so musical and knowledgeable show em' up and post your own awsome video, untill then just enjoy that someone is allowing you to see such awsome synthesizers in action.
